New Minimum Wage May Help Niagara, Says Poverty Network
Ontario’s new minimum wage might be a salve for some of Niagara’s economic woes, says the chair of Niagara Poverty Reduction Network.
Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne announced Tuesday the province’s minimum wage will rise to $15 an hour by 2019, a move that Glen Walker of NRPN says will be a real benefit for many Niagara residents.

Brock Chooses Collaborative Academic Leader for President

Welland Canal Fallen Workers Memorial Task Force Launches Community Campaign
After fundraising more than $700,000 to date, the Welland Canal Fallen Workers Memorial Task Force is seeking support from the community to complete the project and install the memorial later this year.
St. Catharines Mayor Walter Sendzik and fundraising chair Greg Wight kicked off the community fundraising campaign with a donation from the Lynch family.
NC Broadcasting Students Enjoy Winners’ Spotlight
Students from Niagara College’s Broadcasting: Radio, Television and Film program were centre-stage on May 26 at the annual Broadcast Educators Association of Canada (BEAC) awards ceremony in Toronto.
The college won the following categories: long documentary, 8 Weeks; long drama or comedy, The Debriefing; and, radio on-air performance, Julie Vanderlip.
Greening Niagara joins NSI
Niagara’s two largest environmental non-profit organizations have joined forces for environmental sustainability. This merger became effective March 1, 2017, after months of negotiation between the Board of Directors.
Greening Niagara’s programs will now be offered under the umbrella of NSI. Going forward, the organization will maintain the name “Niagara Sustainability Initiative.”
Heart Niagara Celebrates Anniversary with Picnic on the Q
In 2017, Heart Niagara celebrates 40 years of providing community based cardiovascular health services, health promotion and community development.
To celebrate Heart Niagara’s 40th anniversary and to mark Canada’s 150th birthday, they will be hosting a fundraiser along Queen Street called, Picnic on the Q.

Rankin Run Hits $1M Mark Again
Parnell Rd. was a sea of bobbing heads with white and orange t-shirts as the 13,000 runners started the 5k and 1k walk/runs.
In its 12th year, it has grown from humble beginnings of 3000 participants and has for the second year raised a million dollars for cancer care that will stay in Niagara.
Early Exercise in Entrepreneurship Pays Off
Brock University Goodman School of Business students brought entrepreneurship to the elementary level.
The students had a brainstorming session to introduce a Grade 4 class at Power Glen School to the basics of entrepreneurship.

On May 19, the Ontario Government announced their new measures to help small businesses and cut unnecessary Red Tape. The proposed measures will be introduced this fall.
The measures include reducing regulatory costs, streamlining compliance for small business, rewarding good actors, reducing fees and other costs, and more.
Canada’s Farmers and Food Producers Need Access to the World
There’s a big, hungry world out there with Canadian farmers and food producers ready to feed it — but federal government assistance to gain access to foreign markets is crucial to their success, a Senate committee said in a report released Tuesday, May 9, 2017.
“A little help from the federal government could mean the world to Canada’s farmers and food producers,” Senator Ghislain Maltais said at the launch of the committee’s report, Market Access: Giving Canadian Farmers and Processors the World.
