McMaster alumna to lead medical school’s Niagara Regional Campus

Dr. Amanda Bell

Dr. Amanda Bell, an alumna of the Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine, becomes the regional assistant dean of its Niagara Regional Campus on July 1.

She is assuming the role from the inaugural regional assistant dean Dr. Karl Stobbe, who established the Niagara Regional Campus in 2007.

Bell is an associate clinical professor of family medicine for the medical school and a primary care physician in Port Colborne, Ont. She is a McMaster alumna for both her Bachelor of Arts and Science (1995) and her medical degree (1998), and she joined McMaster faculty in 2002 after a residency in Ottawa.

Since then she has been thoroughly involved in medical education, particularly at the Niagara Regional Campus. She is currently director of student affairs for the campus and chair of the student affairs for the undergraduate medical program.

She has taught in most roles in the undergraduate medical program, as well as family medicine residents. Bell has been involved in curriculum development, including development of the Mac Essentials tutor training program; as an examiner for undergraduate and family medicine residency exams; and in preparation and follow-up of the successful accreditation of the undergraduate medical program.

She has presented research nationally, particularly on projects focused on student mistreatment and unprofessional behaviour in the workplace.

As well, Bell has been involved in clinical education and physician recruitment for the Niagara Health System, and led the physician recruitment and retention committee of her community of Port Colborne.

In making the announcement, Dr. Alan Neville, associate dean, health professional education, said: “Amanda has a background in the Niagara region and our campus as well as a strong enthusiasm for medical education.”
