Government of Canada announces $540,000 investment in Niagara tourism

Today, the Honourable Soraya Martinez Ferrada, Minister of Tourism, on behalf of the Honourable Filomena Tassi, Minister responsible for the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario (FedDev Ontario), visited the Byland Estate Winery and announced a FedDev Ontario investment of $540,000 for three projects in the Niagara region: Byland Estate Winery, Flat Rock Cellars Ltd., and the Corporation of the City of Port Colborne.

Minister Ferrada was joined by Vance Badawey, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Transport and Member of Parliament for Niagara Centre, and Chris Bittle, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Housing, Infrastructure and Communities and Member of Parliament for St. Catharines.

Government of Canada invests in digital infrastructure projects across Canada

An efficient and reliable transportation system is essential for our economy. With the National Trade Corridors Fund (NTCF), the Government of Canada invests in making supply chains more efficient, reducing trade barriers, and directly contributes to the growth of businesses to create the economic opportunities of the future.

Today, the Minister of Transport, Pablo Rodriguez, announced up to $51.2 million for 19 digital infrastructure projects under the National Trade Corridors Fund. By supporting the use of innovative technologies for stronger supply chains, the Government of Canada is ensuring that goods move faster and cheaper, making life more affordable for Canadians.

Construction and engineering post modest gains in otherwise flat economy

Real gross domestic product (GDP) was essentially unchanged in March, following a 0.2% increase in February. Both goods-producing and services-producing industries were essentially unchanged in March. Overall, 11 of 20 sectors increased in the month.

Construction rose 1.1% in March, the largest monthly growth rate since January 2022, as almost all types of construction activity increased in March 2024.

Real gross domestic product (GDP) increased 0.4% in the first quarter, after posting no change in the fourth quarter of 2023 (revised down from 0.2%).

Truper McBride to take over as West Lincoln CAO

The Township of West Lincoln has reached out to southwestern Ontario for its next chief administrative officer (CAO).

Truper McBride takes over the top staff job at the municipality on July 15. He will be taking over from treasurer Donna DeFilippis, who was appointed to the position on an interim basis in February, following the retirement of Beverly Hendry, who held the position for five years.

Region still pushing for GO expansion

Regional council remains committed to seeing GO Train service expanded between Niagara Falls and Toronto, a project Niagara officials have been working on for about 10 years.

Following a presentation by Matt Robinson, director of the region’s strategic information office, at a special council meeting, a motion was approved reaffirming the government’s position that all-day, two-way trips are desired.
