NPCA acquires four land parcels to meet conservation goals

The Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority (NPCA) has completed the acquisition of four parcels in Niagara and Haldimand. With these additional 37 hectares, the conservation authority is now at 30 per cent of its total target of 180 hectares by 2031.

Each of the properties holds significant environmental value and contributes to NPCA’s conservation efforts and the natural heritage of the Niagara Peninsula watershed.

Value of issued building permits fell 11.7% in March

Month over month, the total value of building permits in Canada decreased 11.7% to $10.5 billion in March, Statistics Canada reported today. Construction intentions in the non-residential component declined 16.7% to $4.0 billion, while the residential sector decreased by 8.3% to $6.5 billion. Declines were observed in all components except for the commercial component.

On a constant dollar basis (2017=100), the total value of building permits fell 11.6% in March, following two consecutive months of increases.

Government of Canada will provide $202M to Ontario for childcare

The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today announced that the Government of Canada is providing Ontario with $201.87 million to create child care spaces and support inclusive child care services across the province, especially in underserved communities. This investment, part of the previously announced $625 million Early Learning and Child Care Infrastructure Fund, will help Ontario reach our goal of creating 86,000 new child care spaces by 2026 – meaning more families in Ontario can access affordable spaces.

Ontario introduces new cybersecurity legislation

Today, the Ontario government is introducing legislation that, if passed, would provide new tools to prevent and respond to cyber security threats and safeguard critical public services, such as health care and education. By enhancing cyber resilience, the government is ensuring these essential sectors remain secure and operational, protecting the safety and privacy of all Ontarians while providing them with more connected and convenient services across government.

The Strengthening Cyber Security and Building Trust in the Public Sector Act, 2024 would also strengthen safeguards for children’s personal information and lay the foundation for the ethical use of artificial intelligence in the public sector.
