Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says he will resign after Liberals choose new leader

Justin Trudeau said he will resign as prime minister and leader of the Liberal party following a leadership contest, after months of growing calls from within the Liberal caucus that he step down for the good of his party.

Trudeau said he met with Gov. Gen. Mary Simon on Monday morning and that she has agreed to his request to prorogue Parliament until March 24.

Prorogation of parliament kills capital gains tax changes tech community fought

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s move to step down and prorogue parliament has killed a series of changes his government proposed to capital gains.

If passed before the prorogation, the changes would have raised the portion of capital gains on which companies pay tax to two-thirds from one-half.

Applications open for grant programs in Lincoln

The Town of Lincoln has announced that funding opportunities through the Grow Prosper Belong Fund and Whipple Trust Fund Community Grants are open until February 10, 2025.

A grant consultation is mandatory prior to submission. Interested parties can book a consultation by calling 905-563-2799 ext. 283 or emailing recreation@lincoln.ca.

Amazon to end remote work

It’s back to the office full time for the majority of Amazon employees across the globe, but for some who work for the tech giant and online retailer it’s not a welcome change.

Amazon’s corporate employees worked mostly remotely during the COVID-19 pandemic. Since 2023, they were allowed to work a hybrid schedule — two days remotely and three days in the office.

What Trudeau’s resignation will mean for Canada’s economy

Trudeau’s resignation “ushers in a new wave of uncertainty for the Canadian economy and financial markets,” Tu Nguyen, an economist at tax consultant RSM Canada, said in a note following the announcement.

In a sign of how the political upheaval has rattled markets, Bloomberg’s Canada Economic Policy Uncertainty Index surged to 650, its highest level ever, far outstripping its last peak posted at the start of the pandemic.

The index has typically hung around the 200 to 350 mark over the past few decades.
