Niagara-on-the-Lake CAO appointed new Hamilton City Manager

The Town of Niagara-on-the-Lake’s Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) announced today that she will be officially stepping down as CAO, effective January 14, 2024. Hamilton Mayor Andrea Horwath informed City Council of Ms. Cluckie’s planned appointment as City Manager under provincially-granted “Strong Mayor” powers through a special meeting of Council and an information report outlining the search, interview and reference process, as well as an overview of Ms. Cluckie’s experience, strengths and approach.

Under her guidance, the Town has achieved significant milestones and progress in various areas, including the development of the Town Council’s 2022-2027 Strategic Plan, numerous modernization and digitization initiatives, improved transparency and intergovernmental advocacy, and enhanced community engagement and customer experience excellence.

Ontario invests $5.5m in Women’s Economic Security Program

The Ontario government is launching a call for applications and investing $5.5 million, including an additional $496,000 this year, in the Women’s Economic Security Program to expand and increase training opportunities for low-income women to equip them with the skills, knowledge and experience to find a job or start a business and increase their financial security.

The Women’s Economic Security Program offers training in four streams: the skilled trades, entrepreneurship, information technology and general employment. To help remove barriers to participating, the training programs also include additional supports such as providing meals throughout the training day, transportation to and from training, and support in finding child care.

Grimsby demands new Greenbelt process and Provincial compensation

In late 2022, the Province removed land from the Greenbelt as part of its broader push to build 1.5 million homes by 2031, including two parcels of land in Grimsby. In response, Town Staff prepared a report which was formally submitted to the Province. The full report can be found here.

The Town is looking to the Province to define a new process for considering Greenbelt lands, and requesting $82,000 to reimburse the Town for staff time, and third-party legal and consulting services.

“The Province needs to give the Town tools to allow us to properly plan for our future and requires their cooperation and a change in the proposed legislation,” a Grimsby spokesperson said in a statement. “Should the Province grant these requests, the Town process would include meaningful public consultation from our residents.”
