Ford ‘listening to the corner store people,’ says Brock University professor on alcohol sales ‘shake-up’

Since the provincial government announced last week it will allow grocery and convenience stores to sell beer and wine, Brock University researcher Dan Malleck has heard varying opinions — but to him it’s a “significant shake-up” for Ontario’s alcohol sector.

“I don’t see anyone who’s not happy about it, except a few of the unions,” said Malleck, professor and chair of Brock’s department of health sciences and an expert on the history of liquor laws in Canada.

“Ontario has a history of being one of the most temperance-focused provinces, but now what (Premier Doug) Ford has done, he’s really reversing 150 years of history in the sense of the way we look at alcohol and treat it.”
