Niagara College earns No. 1 research college in Canada for second year in a row

For the second year in a row, Niagara College has secured the No. 1 ranking for colleges in Canada for research funding, according to a special report released on December 5. This is the tenth year in a row NC has been in the top 10.

Canada Post reviewing union’s latest counter offer

The union representing some 55,000 striking postal workers has presented Canada Post with a new proposal.

Details of the counter proposal are few, but the union said it contains movement on its demands and the employer’s demands with the hope the two sides can come to an agreement.

Welland, Pelham pass 2025 budgets

The City of Welland’s 2025 budget has been finalized, following Council’s review and adoption of amendments to the Mayor’s proposed budget on December 4. The municipal tax levy increase is set at 3.95%.

Council for the Town of Pelham also approved their 2025 Capital and Operating Budgets at their December 4, 2024, meeting of Council. The final tax levy increase in Pelham for 2025 is 4.84%.

Port Colborne rejects shared fire service with Wainfleet

After review, Port Colborne city staff and Council have determined that the City will not move forward with a shared services agreement for emergency fire services with the Township of Wainfleet.

Port Colborne has welcomed Chief David Wood, new interim Fire Chief for the City of Port Colborne’s Fire Department. Chief Wood previously served as Fire Chief for the City of St. Catharines.

Thorold considers on-street parking ban during winter maintenance

The City of Thorold may declare an on-street parking ban as part of its Winter Maintenance Program so that public works crews can navigate roadways more effectively.

When a snowplow is forced to go around a parked vehicle during a winter weather event, an embankment of snow is left behind, which is difficult for drivers to navigate after snow-clearing measures have taken place.

Ford preparing to give police and municipalities powers to ‘dismantle’ homeless encampments

Premier Doug Ford is prepared to override the courts by giving municipalities and police “enhanced legislative powers” to “dismantle” homeless encampments across Ontario.

“We are acting to put an end to the public disorder, drug use and trafficking and loss of public space that have resulted from the widespread growth in encampments,” Ford said Thursday.

Government of Canada launches $2B home-grown AI strategy

Today, the Honourable François-Philippe Champagne, Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry, officially launched the Canadian Sovereign AI Compute Strategy. The Strategy will invest up to $2 billion, as previously announced in Budget 2024.

New report forecasts food prices will rise up to 5% in 2025

Grocery bills are set to take another jump next year. The Food Price Report 2025 forecasts that food prices will increase between 3% to 5% in the coming year. That means the average family of four will fork over $801.56 more on food compared to 2024, for a total of $16,833.67.

By category, the predicted price increase is highest in meat (4% to 6%), followed by vegetables and restaurants (both at 3% to 5%). Fruit and seafood were on the lower end (1% to 3% each). The report, now in its 15th year, was published by Dalhousie University, University of Guelph, University of British Columbia and University of Saskatchewan.

‘We’re in a recession,’ says former Bank of Canada governor Stephen Poloz

Former Bank of Canada governor Stephen Poloz says Canada is in a recession, arguing the economy’s weakness has been masked by strong population growth.

“I would say we’re in a recession, I wouldn’t even call it a technical one,” said Poloz, now special adviser to Osler, Hoskin & Harcourt LLP, during a webinar on Tuesday. “A technical one is a superficial definition that you have two quarters of negative growth in a row, and we haven’t had that, but the reason is because we’ve been swamped with new immigrants who buy the basics in life, and that boosts our consumption enough.”Click here to read more.
