Royal George Theatre to close its doors after the 2025 holidays

After 110 years, one of Old Town’s most recognizable features will close its doors to the public—for now.

The Shaw Festival announced the Royal George Theatre’s imminent closure in a press release on Friday, alongside details of its 2025 season lineup.

Government of Canada creates national public land bank for builders

The Government of Canada has announced a new tool for builders called the Canada Public Land Bank, the first step under the new Public Lands for Homes Plan. The Canada Public Land Bank features 56 federal properties that have been identified as being able to support housing, including 5 new properties now intended for leasing and ready for builders to submit their plans.

This new list will grow regularly in the coming months, along with further details on listed properties.

Niagara bus fares harmonize to one single price

Niagara Transit commissioners have voted to harmonize fares across the regional bus system at $3.50, effective next Canada Day.

Carla Stout, Niagara Transit general manager, said the fare harmonization extends to all transit programs.

“It is for every service in the system on Niagara Transit,” Stout said during Tuesday’s transit commission meeting. “The one proposed fare is for on-demand, specialized and conventional services.”

Number of payroll employees falls in June after five months’ consecutive rises

The number of employees receiving pay and benefits from their employer—measured as “payroll employment” in the Survey of Employment, Payrolls and Hours—decreased by 47,300 (-0.3%) in June. The decline in June followed five consecutive monthly increases from January to May, with a cumulative gain of 147,600 (+0.8%) over this period. On a year-over-year basis, payroll employment was up 110,400 (+0.6%) in June.

Tech solutions support new Ontario heat-stress toolkit

A Laurentian University researcher has launched a new heat stress toolkit for outdoor workers that is designed to tackle the challenges of Ontario’s record-breaking summer heat.

The free toolkit was the product of significant tech-infused research.

Best practices for hiring with neurodiversity in mind

An estimated 15-20% of the world’s population exhibits some form of neurodivergence, but many are excluded from the workforce. For example, out of 5.6 million autistic adults in the United States, a staggering 50-75% are unemployed or underemployed, despite having the expertise and skill set to excel.
