The City of Welland has appointed Spectra to be the new management operator at Youngs Sportsplex, a 128,000 sq. ft. indoor multi-sport facility located in the City’s north end.

Spectra is a large international venue management company, operating more than 140 venues. Local properties under their management include the First Ontario Centre (formerly Copps Coliseum) in Hamilton, Royal Botanical Gardens in Burlington, Hamilton Place, Budweiser Gardens in London, and Ryerson University’s Mattamy Centre (formerly Maple Leaf Gardens) in Toronto.

“The Youngs Sportsplex is a recreational asset for our City and it’s a premier indoor sports facility in Niagara,” said Welland Mayor Frank Campion. “It is currently under capacity and under-utilized so we’re excited about having Spectra on board to help us maximize programming and maximize revenue.”

In addition to exploring programming opportunities, forging new alliances, and creating special events, Spectra will be partnering with the current anchor tenants, the Welland Soccer Club and the Welland Tennis Club. Spectra have also indicated that they will be making investments in leasehold improvements in the facility to provide food and beverage options for patrons.

Youngs Sportsplex, built in 2012 and owned by the City of Welland, has four indoor tennis courts, an indoor FIFA regulation sized soccer field, and five outdoor soccer fields. Spectra will assume day-to-day responsibility of management, operations, and programming effective January 1, 2017. The City retained Price Waterhouse Cooper to create a process to select a new management operator.
