Niagara Industrial Association Has a New Vice Chair
It is with great pleasure that the Niagara Industrial Association (NIA) announces the appointment of Aaron Tisdelle as new Vice Chair. The position had been vacant since the earlier resignation of Misheck Mwaba back in August. Misheck resigned in order to pursue career aspirations in Calgary, Alberta.
The Board looks forward to working with Aaron and a transition of power over the coming months will transpire. This is to coincide with the completion of tenure for our current Chair, Domenic Ursini.
Hybrid Truck May Join Welland’s Fleet
Welland staff are recommending that the city take part in a six month pilot project to test one Plug-in Hybrid Electric (PHEV) 1/2 ton truck. The only costs associated with the project, from a staff report presented on October 24, are insurance at $225, fuel and basic maintenance.
The vehicle will be supplied by Association of Municipalities Ontario (AMO) through a climate challenge funding program. The vehicle would use battery power first before switching to a backup gasoline engine once the batteries are depleted.
Breweries Celebrate Fourth Annual Oktoberfest
A fair amount of sunshine and a whole lot of polka music adds up to a good time at the fourth annual Oktoberfest held this year at Lock Street Brewing in Port Dalhousie. So much so that, in fact, organisers had to run out and get more sausages and food.
“The perfect day for it, the weather has been very kind to us,” said Louise Rowe, program manager at the brewery. It’s the first time the celebration has been held outside the Folk Arts Multicultural Centre.
River Lions Tickets for Youth Groups Available
Local community youth groups and charities are being given the chance to cheer on the Niagara River Lions from the city of St. Catharines’ community suite at the Meridian Centre.
Registered charities, incorporated non-profit organizations and minor not-for-profit sports associations are eligible to apply for 12 tickets and use the suite at select home games.
Carousel Players Announces Appointment of New Artistic Director
Carousel Players is pleased to announce that Monica Dufault will become the company’s next Artistic Director. Ms. Dufault will begin as Artistic Director at Carousel Players in January 2018, succeeding outgoing Artistic Director Jessica Carmichael, who recently joined the faculty at Concordia University.
Monica Dufault has been an active member of the Niagara arts community for more than twenty years. As an actor, she performed at theatres across the country, including The Shaw Festival, Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre, Theatre Aquarius, and the National Arts Centre.
Industrial Association Supports Development Charge Bylaw
After being assured that the new development charges bylaw being considered by Niagara Region council on October 25 would continue to waive fees for new and expanding industrial facilities in a timely manner, Niagara Industrial Association Chair Domenic Ursini said his organization supports the policy.
Ursini said the Region’s previous bylaw, which expired on Aug. 31, “fostered a lot of development, be it both new development as well as expansions.” The new bylaw, he added, “basically calls for the continuation of the waiving of industrial development charges.”

Rapid Policy Update: Ontario’s 2017 Long-Term Energy Plan
On October 26, the Ontario Government released its 2017 Long-Term Energy Plan (LTEP), Delivering Fairness and Choice. The plan comes after a year-long consultation, which saw engagement from across the province.
The OCC as put together a Rapid Policy Update including a high-level synopsis of the plan, including the Ontario Chamber of Commerce’s analysis and comparison to our Long-Term Energy Submission, Leading the Charge.
Threat of cyberattacks ‘more worrisome than all the other stuff’
Of all the economic fears that could keep Stephen Poloz awake at night, the threat of a cyberattack is perhaps the one that troubles him the most.
The Bank of Canada governor can talk all day about household debt and how a global recession would slow down the economy, push up unemployment and make mortgage payments difficult for some people, and never lose faith that the system would be resilient enough to prevail, he said in an interview.
NAFTA Talks Leave Some Canadians Working in the U.S. Uncertain About Their Jobs
Living and working in the United States gave Jo-Anne Beggs an experience that she may not have had in Canada.
It was possible because of the non-immigrant NAFTA Professional (TN) visa. It’s a temporary, three-year work permit given to citizens of Canada, the U.S. and Mexico for certain jobs. Now, with the trade agreement under the microscope — and U.S. President Donald Trump repeatedly threatening to dismantle the whole thing — the visa’s future is uncertain.
