The Ontario Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with the GNCC, needs your help on two important pieces of policy work: a review of currently-exempt occupations from some clauses of the Employment Standards Act, and the 2018 Provincial pre-budget submission. We want to hear from your business on these important issues. Tell us what’s important to you, and make sure the power of the Chamber network is working to your advantage at Queen’s Park!
As part of the Fair Workplaces and Better Jobs Act, the government of Ontario is reviewing eight occupations (architects; domestic workers; homemakers; IT professionals; managerial and supervisory employees; pharmacists; residential building superintendents, janitors and caretakers; residential care workers) that are currently exempt from minimum employment standards under the Employment Standards Act. The OCC is working on a submission to government on the exemptions review. To share your opinions with the OCC and help shape their submission, please contact Nadia Todorova.
The OCC has begun planning for its 2018 Provincial pre-budget submission. We invite members of the Chamber Network who are considering similar submissions to share your ideas with us. We thank you in advance for your participation in this important policy file. Provide your feedback to Andrew Thiele.

How is trade under Trudeau shaping up?
It’s been a tumultuous few weeks for Justin Trudeau’s progressive free trade agenda, with uncertainty looming over several existing and potential deals.
Just weeks after the Canadian prime minister was lambasted for apparently “sabotaging” a major pacific trade deal, his office is planning a trade mission to China. Meanwhile, officials from Canada, Mexico and the United States are at loggerheads over controversial proposals in a renegotiation of their North American deal.
With U.S. out, Canada’s focus on TPP is more important than NAFTA
Canada’s government is engaged in a two-pronged trade negotiation strategy as its handles simultaneous negotiations with its NAFTA partners and a revived TPP bid.
However, TPP-11 is starting to take greater precedence over the stalled NAFTA negotiations and could put the country in a better negotiating position with the U.S. “The TPP was seen as a way to keep the U.S. in check if you like,” says Daniel Schwanen, vice president of research at the C.D. Howe Institute.
Lack of Details on Small Business Tax Changes Concerning
Despite the federal government’s partial adjustments to its small business tax changes, business groups are still troubled about the potential negative effects the revised proposals will have on small and medium-sized firms.
The concerns are spelled-out in a new letter to Finance Minister Bill Morneau by the Coalition for Small Business Tax Fairness, a unified voice of now almost 80 organizations representing hundreds of thousands of business owners across the country.
