IN THE NEWS
Rankin Run Raises $1 Million for Cancer Care in Niagara
Niagara’s generosity was shining bright, despite a rainy start to Saturday’s Rankin Cancer Run. The inspiring community event, featuring thousands of participants in St. Catharines, raised a remarkable $1 million for cancer care in Niagara.
The Rankin Run is an important fundraiser for local cancer support organizations, including the Walker Family Cancer Centre and other services Niagara Health provides across the region. In its 14 years, the event has raised more than $9.5 million. All of that money stays in Niagara.
Shred Event Raises Money for Lincoln County Humane Society
Join Knight Archives for their annual charity shredding event on Saturday, June 1 at their facility at 4264 Bartlett Road in Beamsville. Paper of any kind is accepted and will be securely shredded; personal and business documents are acceptable.
Bring your documents to shred and support the Lincoln County Humane Society at the same time — the LCHS will be on hand to provide information about the local animals in their care who are in need of adoption.
Niagara Parks Series Showcases Local Farms, Craft Breweries and Wineries
Niagara Parks has announced the upcoming dates for its 2019 Pop-up Dinner series. Showcasing sites along the Niagara River corridor, the series features locally inspired menus prepared by Niagara Parks chefs, paired with local craft beer and VQA wines, as guests are treated to stories from experts and guest speakers.
Since beginning in May 2017, Niagara Parks has expanded the series to include fall and winter editions. The agency’s culinary philosophy of embracing and promoting the local food movement is the foundation of each Pop-up Dinner event.
Niagara Community Foundation Hosts Canada Goat Open Golf Finale
The Goats and the Niagara Community Foundation are heading back to Cherry Hill Club one last time. The foundation will host their 27th and final Canada Goat Open Golf Tournament on June 4 at the Ridgeway club.
To date, the tournament has raised more than $1 million for charities across Niagara and for the Goat Endowment Fund at the foundation. The Goats are “an amazing group of generous, hard-working” volunteers who are committed to helping their community, said Bryan Rose, the foundation’s executive director.
Thorold Approves Summer Games Spending
You can add Thorold to the list of partners for the construction of Canada Games Park. On May 21, Thorold city council committed $5 million to the facility at Brock University and another $2 million for infrastructure servicing of the property.
The funding is contingent on upper tiers of government fulfilling their commitments to the 2021 Canada Summer Games and Thorold council approving an operating model and partnership agreement to be negotiated.
‘It’s Like Having A Nurse At Home 24/7’
Inside his Niagara Falls home, the machine that acts as Luc Lessard’s kidney is asking him to enter information about his health. Luc records his blood pressure, weight, temperature and heart rate on the touch screen. Luc is using the innovative Amia system, a peritoneal dialysis cycler that is improving care and increasing independence for people who receive dialysis at home.
Niagara Health was one of the first hospitals in Ontario to introduce the system, and now has more than 20 home dialysis patients using the technology. It’s another example of how Niagara Health is providing more seamless care outside of its hospital walls.
