Black History Month Celebrated in Niagara
The St. Catharines Museum & Welland Canals Centre is celebrating Black History Month with a special monthly blog series, as well as special one-hour guided tours of their award-winning Follow the North Star exhibit!
Tours are open to the general public and admission is by donation. While registration is not necessary, visitors are asked to call the Museum if they plan to attend a tour. Tours are offered Thursdays (February 8, 15, 22) at 10am, as well as Saturday, February 10 and 24 at 2pm.
Gillian’s Place Presents the 2018 Performance of The Vagina Monologues
With humor and grace, the award-winning The Vagina Monologues celebrates women’s sexuality and strength. Through this play and the liberation of this one word, countless women throughout the world have taken control of their bodies and their lives.
For twenty years, The Vagina Monologues has given voice to experiences and feelings not previously exposed in public. Proceeds support the work of Gillian’s Place, safe shelter and support programs for abused women and children, serving St. Catharines and North Niagara.
NCDSB, NWPB Present Pathways Speaker Summmit
On Tuesday, February 6, the Niagara Catholic District School Board and Niagara Workforce Planning Board will host a speaker summit on the myths and truths of the future of education and career opportunities in Niagara and beyond.
Administrators, teachers, parents, students, and the community are all invited to hear directly from local business and education leaders about emerging industries, markets, and job opportunities.
Black Tie Monopoly Fundraiser Returns to Seaway Mall
The Seaway Mall would like to cordially invite you to their Black Tie Monopoly Fundraiser, a unique and exclusive event in support of the United Way. All proceeds will be invested into local programs and services such as The Hope Centre, Port Cares and Big Brothers Big Sisters.

ncTakeOff Panel Explores Cannabis Industry in Niagara
A rapidly expanding cannabis industry is set to bring positive changes to Niagara’s economic and educational landscapes. That was the focus of a panel discussion at Niagara College in a packed Yerich Auditorium on January 25.
The event, hosted by ncTakeOff, the college’s entrepreneurship hub, featured a lively discussion on the future of the cannabis industry in Niagara, and how government, education and business can work together to position Niagara for success.
Toques and Pancakes to Help the Homeless
Buying a pancake, a cup of coffee and a hat next Tuesday will help put a roof over the head of a homeless teen in St. Catharines. On Tuesday morning from 7 to 9, Community Care of St. Catharines and Thorold will host the 18th annual Toque Tuesday and Mayor’s Pancake Breakfast to raise money to fight local homelessness.
“This was something that was started by (former mayor) Tim Rigby years ago and it’s still going strong,” said Betty-Lou Souter, CEO of Community Care.
GoFundMe Launched for Tomorrow’s Voices Children’s Choir
Tomorrow’s Voices is a barrier-free choir for children between the ages 7-17 in Niagara recruited from various social and charitable agencies. The choir is a unique opportunity to bring the kids together each week and sing under the guidance of professional recording and touring artists.
The choiry would not exist without the assistance of generous sponsors and donors. The GoFundMe campaign will provide much needed support to continue the weekly choir sessions and postsecondary education for graduating choir members.

The Town of Niagara-on-the-Lake has set aside a significant site in the heart of the Old Town to understand, celebrate, and honour its Black history. Voices of Freedom is an experiential art installation designed to engage, educate, and challenge visitors about this most important aspect of our history. Voices from the past will tell their stories, enriching visitors’ understanding of how they shaped our town and nation.
But Voices of Freedom isn’t just about looking back. Ongoing research and programming will allow today’s and tomorrow’s voices to impact our nation’s future. It is a tragic injustice that, amidst the celebrated historical importance of Niagara-on-the-Lake, the Town’s significant and nation-shifting Black history has not been given a proper “hearing.”
Voices of Freedom is intent on righting this wrong. Individually and collectively, all of Canada will benefit from listening to the Black voices of Canada’s past, present, and future. Such a hearing is essential for our nation to move towards a fair, just, and free society.
2018 will be the 225th anniversary of the Act to Limit Slavery in Upper Canada and the beginning of the underground railway to Canada so what a time to honour this piece of history The Town of Niagara-on-the-Lake has donated the required land and a campaign has started to raise $650,000 to complete the park.

Canadian Chamber Welcomes Mark Agnew as Director, International Affairs
The Canadian Chamber of Commerce announced today the appointment of Mark Agnew as Director, International Affairs. “I’m happy to welcome Mark to our team,” said Hon. Perrin Beatty, President and CEO of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce.
“Mark’s understanding of international trade, taxation and regulatory issues, as well as the Canadian business and political environments will be instrumental in helping us to advance pro-business policies that strengthen Canada’s competitiveness and economic prosperity.”
Chambers Urge Feds To Ensure Level Playing Field
The Greater Niagara, Sault Ste. Marie, Windsor-Essex Regional, Sarnia Lambton, and Thunder Bay Chambers of Commerce are calling for the Federal Government to keep the de minimis threshold (DMT) low to ensure retailers in Canada and U.S. have a level playing field.
In December, PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP released the Retail Council of Canada-commissioned study: Rise in Canada’s de minimis threshold: Economic Impact Assessment, concluding that raising the DMT would drastically impact retailers in Canada, their employees and the overall economy.

The OCC has partnered with the Government of Ontario to lead the Small Business Access initiative, to educate and raise awareness of the available resources for small businesses in Ontario.
