Committee on the Fair Workplaces, Better Jobs Act 2017 to meet in Niagara
On July 19th, the Standing Committee on Finance and Economic Affairs, reviewing the Ontario Government’s Fair Workplaces, Better Jobs Act 2017, will hear from the public in Niagara at the Sheraton on the Falls Hotel in Niagara Falls. The Act includes a raft of legislation on unionization, paid vacation, sick leave, and so forth, but most importantly, will review the government’s recently-announced decision to ramp minimum wage up to $15/hr by January 2019, a hike of 32 per cent over 18 months (with a 26 per cent hike to come in only 7). You can read our summary, and our open letter to Premier Wynne. The GNCC has been very active in expressing the justifiable concerns of the business community over this legislation through all available channels, and we will speak to the Committee when it comes to Niagara. We are scheduled to present at 9:50am, although the Committee will be hearing delegations all day.
Although the deadline to make a presentation to the Committee has passed, we encourage members of Niagara’s business community to write to the Committee and express their concerns over this legislation, or to come out to the hearing in Niagara as a member of the audience. The GNCC will continue to advocate for evidence-based, data-driven policy that drives economic prosperity and supports Niagara’s businesses.
