At the GNCC, we stand for economic prosperity, for supporting business growth and job creation, and for evidence-based, data-driven decision making. With that in mind, we have a lot of reservations about these policies.

Chinese-Canadians’ Reslience: Opinion by Senator Oh, Senator Dyck, and Senator Woo
As we celebrate the 150th anniversary of Canada’s Confederation, another anniversary must not go overlooked. May 14, 2017 marks 70 years since the repeal of the Chinese Immigration Act, the only law in Canadian history to bar a specific ethnic group entry.
Today, roughly 1.5 million people of Chinese descent live in Canada. The first significant wave began in the 19th century.

Annual Tall Ship Cruises Ready to Set Sail
Niagara College’s annual Tall Ship Cruises aboard the Empire Sandy are ready to sail this June. A Tall Ship Twilight Dinner Cruise and a daytime Tall Ship Cruise Through History will set sail on June 9 and 10.

New Physicians Graduate From McMaster’s Niagara Regional Campus
Two new physicians are graduating from the Niagara Regional Campus of the Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine with a “sense of wow.”
Together they developed an elective program that puts new medical students in the shoes of hospital nurses, and the successful program is being developed further than they ever imagined.
Welland Using Cloud-Based GIS Data Collection For Better Service Delivery
The City of Welland’s Engineering and Information Services Divisions are now using a GIS-centric cloud-based data collection APP to document more than 300 km of sidewalks more accurately and efficiently.
Through a tablet or mobile phone, staff are able to survey, collect data, and prioritize what areas of city sidewalks are in need of repair.
Taking Stock of Canada-U.S. Economic Ties
With so much uncertainty swirling around the future of American foreign and trade policy, members of the Senate Committee on Banking, Trade and Commerce travelled to New York City and Washington, D.C. on a four-day fact finding trip.
They discussed important issues facing the economies of both countries in the early days of the new Trump administration.

Rapid Policy Update: Ontario’s Burden Reduction Announcement
On May 19, the Ontario Government announced their new measures to help small businesses and cut unnecessary Red Tape. The proposed measures will be introduced this fall.
The measures include reducing regulatory costs, streamlining compliance for small business, rewarding good actors, reducing fees and other costs, and more.
Canada’s Farmers and Food Producers Need Access to the World
There’s a big, hungry world out there with Canadian farmers and food producers ready to feed it — but federal government assistance to gain access to foreign markets is crucial to their success, a Senate committee said in a report released Tuesday, May 9, 2017.
“A little help from the federal government could mean the world to Canada’s farmers and food producers,” Senator Ghislain Maltais said at the launch of the committee’s report, Market Access: Giving Canadian Farmers and Processors the World.
