Government of Canada announces two-month GST/HST break for groceries and holiday essentials

The government announced that it will be introducing legislation in Parliament that would provide for a two-month Goods and Services Tax/Harmonized Sales Tax (GST/HST) break for groceries and holiday essentials.

The government is proposing that the GST/HST be fully and temporarily relieved on holiday essentials, like groceries, restaurant meals, drinks, snacks, children’s clothing, and gifts, from December 14, 2024, to February 15, 2025.

The Canadian Chamber of Commerce said that it was “pleased to see recognition that the affordability crisis continues to hurt Canadians,” but noted that there was still no clear plan to revive the economy.

The NDP won’t support ending the privilege debate but said that they will back a motion to support this relief.

Ottawa’s GST relief and rebate measures ‘all but close to the door’ to jumbo BoC rate cut, says economist

While a federal government’s GST break is expected to lower inflation temporarily, some economists say the proposed tax relief and rebate measures announced on Thursday could result in a slower pace of rate cuts for the Bank of Canada and take a jumbo rate cut off the table for December.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced on Thursday that his government plans to temporarily lift the federal sales tax on a range of items, including toys, diapers, restaurant meals, beer and wine, from Dec. 14 to Feb. 15. The government also unveiled the “Working Canadians Rebate,” which would provide Canadians who worked in 2023 and made less than $150,000 with a cheque for $250 in the spring.
