Government of Canada invests $6.5M in Niagara College-led SONAMI and Niagara manufacturers
Today, on behalf of the Honourable Filomena Tassi, Minister responsible for the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario (FedDev Ontario), local MPs Vance Badawey and Chris Bittle visited Niagara College to announce an investment of $4 million for the Niagara College-led Southern Ontario Network for Advanced Manufacturing Innovation (SONAMI).
Badawey also announced support for two manufacturers in the Niagara region: CMI Heavy Industries, receiving $1.5M, and Black Creek Metal Inc., which was granted $1M.

Vacant 12 years in St. Catharines, Carlisle Street parking garage commercial space is finally leased
It has taken more than 12 years, but the City of St. Catharines has finally found a taker for its vacant commercial space in the Carlisle Street parking garage.
The 1,115 square metres (12,000 square feet) of prime downtown storefront could become home to a small grocery store, daycare, beauty salon and other businesses and services, if lessee Nick Atalick has his way.

Federal government announces grant to supercharge Niagara College’s Motive Power program
On Tuesday, October 15, Vance Badawey, Member of Parliament, Niagara Centre, and Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Transport, announced $365,854 from the federal government – matched by the College – through the 2023 Canadian Apprenticeship Strategy – ‘Investments in Training Equipment’ program stream.
As a leader in green automotive technology, the investment will advance the College’s ability to train students on hybrid and electric vehicle technology.

Food Processing Skills Canada launches program to alleviate labour shortage in food manufacturing
Food Processing Skills Canada today announced the launch of FoodAbility, a new program that recognizes that more than 800,000 people with disabilities in Canada have the potential to find meaningful employment, but are not employed.
The Canadian food and beverage manufacturing industry is a top employer in the country, with a workforce of more than 310,000 people in 2023. However, due to industry growth and retirements, the demand for new hires requires an addition of almost 12,000 new people annually. FoodAbility will take employers from awareness to action with comprehensive training modules, workshops and resources that empower businesses to cultivate inclusive environments.

Canadians anticipate spending more money on groceries this holiday season: survey
Givex’s 2024 Holiday Survey found that 57% of consumers anticipate higher food costs this year.
Canadians plan to spend an average of around $200 on dining over the holidays, and 39% will seek out dining options that offer promotions.
