Algoma receives grants from Transport Canada’s Green Shipping Corridor Program
While marine transportation is already the most eco-friendly mode of moving goods, innovative technologies emerge as possibilities for greater improvements. Algoma is actively exploring these advancements to identify their long-term viability and feasibility for a greener future on the Great Lakes – St. Lawrence Seaway.
Today, the Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Transport and Member of Parliament for Niagara Centre, Vance Badawey, on behalf of the Minister of Transport, Pablo Rodriguez, announced $1.7 million for 14 projects under the Green Shipping Corridor Program’s Clean Vessel Demonstration stream. Algoma received five grants totalling almost $600,000.
“At Algoma, we believe research must come first,” a spokesperson said in a media release issued today. “This is not to stall innovation but to ensure we get it right.”
Inflation rate slows to 2.7% in June while food prices continue to rise
The Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose 2.7% on a year-over-year basis in June, down from a 2.9% gain in May. The deceleration was largely the result of slower year-over-year growth in gasoline prices, which rose 0.4% in June following a 5.6% increase in May. Excluding gasoline, the CPI rose 2.8% in June.
Moderating the deceleration was an increase in prices for food purchased from stores (+2.1%), as well as a smaller decline for cellular services in June (-12.8%) compared with May (-19.4%).
Alectra invests $7.9M in St. Catharines to enhance reliability and meet growing energy demands
Alectra Utilities announced a significant investment of $7.9 million in capital renewal projects to enhance the reliability, and meet the growing energy demands, in the City of St. Catharines. As the community continues to expand, Alectra is committed to renewing and modernizing the electricity infrastructure to help ensure reliable service for both residential and commercial customers.
Alectra set an exceptional reliability record in 2023, with customers experiencing approximately one outage per year on average and less than one hour without power annually. This places Alectra among the leaders in reliability among Ontario’s Local Distribution Companies (LDCs).
Welland set to host three national flatwater events
Between July and October, the Can American Club Crew Championships, the Canoe Kayak Canada Sprint National Championships, and the Rowing Canada Aviron National Rowing Championships will draw athletes and spectators from across the country and the United States. Each of these events will happen at the Welland International Flatwater Centre.
“We’re thrilled to host these prestigious flatwater events in Welland,” said Erin Carl, supervisor of festival and events.
West Lincoln Council votes to fill vacancy via by-election
At the July 15 Council (including all Committees) meeting, West Lincoln Council directed the Township Clerk to proceed with a by-election to fill the vacant Ward 3 Councillor position. The Council vacancy was declared at the June 24 Council meeting in accordance with section 259(c) of the Municipal Act.
The process to fill a vacancy via by-election is regulated by the Municipal Elections Act. A by-election is conducted following the same rules as a regular election, with the exception of some unique time frames and deadlines.
Government of Canada releases new Green Buildings Strategy
Today, the Honourable Jonathan Wilkinson, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, released Canada’s first Green Buildings Strategy.
Greenhouse gas emissions associated with heating and cooling are the cause of buildings being Canada’s third-largest emitting sector (after oil and gas and transportation). The Strategy helps Canadians adopt heat pumps and save money on their energy bills through programs targeted at low- and median-income households like the new Canada Greener Homes Affordability program and the Oil to Heat Pump Affordability Program.
