Brad Steeves returns as United Way Niagara’s 2024 Campaign Chair
United Way Niagara has announced that Brad Steeves will return for a second year as the 2024 Campaign Chair. Steeves is the President of Beatties Business Products.
Last year’s campaign raised $5.2M under his leadership.
Urban Economy Forum and Niagara’s Elevate Living discuss potential collaboration for sustainable urban residential development
Elevate Living’s founder Drew Toth, a force in sustainable urban residential development in Niagara region, and the esteemed Chair of the Urban Economy Forum, Reza Pourvaziry a 25 year veteran of the innovative program, met at the World Urban Pavilion to discuss a potential collaboration for Elevate Living, the Urban Economy Forum as well as the UN Habitat global initiative. This meeting marks the start of a potential collaboration that could impact the trajectory of sustainable urban development in cities locally and globally as both leaders convene to discuss the residential project, Warbler Place Urban Village.
The meeting between Reza Pourvaziry and Drew Toth was enlightening as both visionaries exchanged ideas on how to elevate urban living standards while prioritizing sustainable communities and cities. Their shared commitment to sustainable urbanization and inclusive development laid the foundation for a potential “Made-in-Canada” collaboration, poised to shape the future of urban landscapes in small to medium sized cities worldwide.
‘Popular in our tap room’: Beamsville-based Bench Brewing wins gold at Canadian Brewing Awards
Bench Brewing Co.’s Lincoln Lager has always been a go-to beer in the Beamsville company’s tap room.
But the bright and crisp German Helles-style lager should have an additional audience beyond the Bench drinking establishment after it received a gold medal from the 2024 Canada Brewery Awards last month in the North American-style lager category.
Job vacancies continue to decline in the first quarter as labour market eases
Job vacancies fell by 24,300 (-3.6%) to 648,600 in the first quarter, marking the seventh consecutive quarterly decline from the record high of 983,600 reached in the second quarter of 2022. Ontario opens nominations for 2024 Excellence in Agriculture Awards
The Ontario government is opening nominations for the 2024 Excellence in Agriculture Awards, which recognize the outstanding efforts driving the agriculture and food industry forward. These awards celebrate farmers, processors, industry organizations, people and businesses who demonstrate excellence in their field and are paving the way towards a more sustainable and profitable industry.
Nominations are being accepted until July 22, 2024. You can submit a self-nomination or nominate another person or a business.
Key changes coming to VQA standards
Three key changes to VQA rules, that include the creation of a West Niagara regional appellation, amended labelling for Charmat wines, and approval of three new hybrids, is awaiting government approval.
The Ministry of Public and Business Service Delivery has now posted these VQA regulation changes for public consultation on the Ontario Regulatory Registry. The posting will be open for comment until July 5.
Still under discussion is an expanded list of authorized grape varieties by adding additional vinifera and hybrid varieties. Feedback received from wineries and stakeholders will be reviewed by the board at its June meeting and will determine next steps.
B.C.’s longshore foremen overwhelmingly vote to reject ‘final offer’ from employer
B.C.’s longshore foremen have voted overwhelmingly to reject the “final offer” from the BC Maritime Employers Association (BCMEA).
Ninety-nine per cent of the 584 foremen voted to reject the offer.
Since May 26, 2023, ILWU Local 514 and the BCMEA have been engaged in collective bargaining and agreed to participate in a last-ditch mediation effort to reach a tentative agreement.

Environment Canada says it can now rapidly link high-heat weather events to climate change
Environment and Climate Change Canada says it’s now able to publicly identify links between episodes of extreme heat and climate change within days of a weather event.
The federal department says that its scientists now have the ability to estimate the degree to which human-induced climate change played a role in a heat wave or extreme heat event within a week of it happening.
Friederike Otto, an internationally renowned climate researcher and one of the global leaders in weather attribution science, said Canada’s weather service will be the first in the world to issue rapid analyses of heat events.
