Ontario expanding mass timber construction up to 18 storeys
Ontario is expanding the use of advanced wood construction like mass timber. Currently, Ontario’s Building Code allows Encapsulated Mass Timber Construction buildings to be up to 12-storeys tall.
The province intends to amend the Building Code in the coming months to permit encapsulated mass timber construction up to 18 storeys.
Niagara-on-the-Lake’s new economic development officer will focus on attracting businesses
Niagara-on-the-Lake’s new economic development officer will have her hands full meeting the town’s plan to retain and attract new businesses to the community.
The town announced on April 3 that it had hired Ashleigh Myers as its new economic development officer, “who will lead initiatives to support local businesses, attract investments and foster sustainable growth for the betterment of the community.”
Myers takes over her new position on May 6.
Meridian Credit Union reports 2023 financial results
Meridian today reported its financial results for the year ending December 31, 2023. Despite a volatile interest rate and economic environment in 2023, Meridian continued to be profitable. Meridian also strengthened its capital base in 2023 by issuing $161.2 million of investment shares.
“Meridian returned to more normalized earnings in 2023 after two straight years of extraordinary profitability in 2021 and 2022” said Brian Wilson, Chief Financial Officer, Meridian Credit Union. “The additional regulatory capital generated through the investment share issue helps to solidify Meridian’s capital base in a very uncertain economic environment”.

Staff training far more cost-effective than going through a cyber compromise – Canadian Centre for Cyber Security
The first step to building a good awareness program is understanding the threat to an organization’s sector, Rajiv Gupta, associate head of the government’s Canadian Centre for Cyber Security said, and in some cases to the individual firm. To help, the Cyber Centre puts out National Threat Assessments.
“Unfortunately, it’s not until they are hit by cybercrime that many organizations really understand how bad it is,” he said. “So step one for the organization to go through the worst case scenarios and understand what would happen if they got hit by ransomware and understand what the threat is. That’s when they start to understand the value of the training and creating that culture of cybersecurity.”
