Niagara Region committed to working together to prevent and end poverty through its Poverty Reduction Strategy
Based on community engagement and research, Niagara Region’s 2024-2028 Poverty Reduction Strategy has been developed with the goal of working together to prevent and end poverty and increase well-being in Niagara.
The strategy was developed and shaped by the diverse voices of residents in Niagara, including those who are disproportionately affected by poverty. A Poverty Reduction Steering Committee, community groups, residents and community champions, including Indigenous communities, shared their time, commitment and stories through meaningful community conversations.
Niagara-on-the-Lake heritage staff propose strategy to protect town’s historical buildings
Niagara-on-the-Lake heritage staff are crafting a strategy that will protect at least some of the town’s heritage buildings as a deadline to designate historical structures ends by December 2024.
Town staff and members of the heritage committee will be conducting a built heritage survey and consulting with the public to create a second list of historic buildings that should be designated by town council.
Shaw Festival announces 2023 season results
During the Shaw Festival’s Annual Meeting, Treasurer Greg Prince announced the Shaw Festival attained operating revenues of $36.7 million – The Shaw’s largest operating revenue level ever – but cost escalations and attendance shortfalls resulted in an operating deficit of $5.7 million for the 2023 season.
Executive Director Tim Jennings admitted that “it would be hard to call a year, in which we posted an operating deficit, one I feel entirely good about; however, the changes we have implemented for 2024 offer an excellent chance to start repaying that investment quickly.”
St. Catharines-Niagara makes Most Burgled Cities in Canada list
Breaking and entering incidents in Canada seem to be on the rise, with a reported 132,155 cases in 2022, or a 5.4% increase from the previous year. Surprisingly, this rise came after a period of declining incidents.
The research team at Handybros gathered data from Canada’s official statistical office relating to burglary offences in Canadian cities.
Loop Technology looking for partners among Canadian manufacturers
As part of MarS’ incubator program, Innovate UK, three British technology start-ups are working in Canada to try and commercialize their technologies and assist Cdn. advanced manufacturing in maintaining its competitiveness. Loop Technology, Inventor-E, and Invisu, are all British companies setting up shop in Canada to expand on their research and find manufacturing partners.
Loop Technology is using automation technology in composite manufacturing to reduce waste and emissions in the manufacturing of aircraft and large vehicles. Through its advanced robotics and automation technologies, Loop is working with established robotics companies such as FANUC and KUKA to improve throughput and efficiency in manufacturing while reducing the weight of assembled goods, and thus reducing its carbon footprint.

10 reasons why Canadians are still dissatisfied with the economy, despite the upswing
The COVID-19 pandemic is no longer a global emergency, Canada’s GDP outperformed expectations in 2023, the economy seems to be heading for soft landing after a period of stagnation, inflation is winding down and unemployment has decreased to 5.7 per cent in January 2024 — close to pre-pandemic levels.
Despite these positive economic indicators, recent surveys suggest Canadians are dissatisfied with the direction of the economy. An overwhelming 84 per cent of Canadians believe the country is already in a recession, with 73 per cent anticipating one within the next year. Young people, in particular, are fearful of the future.
This discrepancy prompts the question: Why are Canadians’ sentiments so at odds with economic indicators? As economists, we have identified several reasons that explain why this gap exists.
