Niagara Health partnership with Indigenous business provides economic benefit to local First Nation
A Southern Ontario First Nation has received the first in an anticipated series of donations funded by a unique partnership rooted in Niagara Health’s economic reconciliation efforts with Indigenous Peoples.
James Hiebert, who is part of the Turtle Clan, Mohawk Nation, and President of Medical, Surgical and Safety Supplies (MSS) Ltd., presented a social benefit cheque for $15,000 from Turtle Island Health and Research Society, the social enterprise arm of MSS, to the Chief and Council of the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation last week.
Town of Lincoln updates strategic plan for a Future-Fit Lincoln
Town of Lincoln Council, elected in late 2022, has updated its strategic plan for 2022-26. The Town’s Committee of the Whole unanimously passed its Council Priorities 2022-26: Strategic Planning for a Future-Fit Lincoln at its July 31 meeting, to be ratified by Town of Lincoln Council on August 8, 2023. The official document will be shared and communicated with the community in Fall 2023. This refresh and update of Council priorities did not include the previously approved mission, vision and values, which together with the Town’s cultural pillars was intended to cover a ten-year period.
Niagara Parks Announces Plans for New Visitor Transportation System
Niagara Parks has officially launched a call for proposals process for a new visitor transportation system that will enhance the guest experience while linking Niagara Parks sites and experiences with a focus on the core tourism area of Queen Victoria Park.
From the beginning, Niagara Parks has operated modes of transportation to facilitate access to the stunning viewpoints along the scenic Niagara Parkway overlooking Niagara Falls. The principle is included in the historic Niagara Parks Act (1885) that states that the Commission construct and operate incline railways, aerial cars, lifts, and works to assist the public in reaching and viewing points of interest in the Parks.
Niagara-on-the-Lake approves 2022-2027 Strategic Plan
At the July 25, 2023, Council Meeting, Town Council approved the 2022-2027 Strategic Plan. Council’s Strategic Plan acts as a guiding roadmap, defining measurable goals and priorities that will shape the future of Niagara-on-the-Lake, remaining dynamic and relevant during Council’s term.
The Town’s Vision Statement is: Enriching and protecting our heritage, agriculture, and natural beauty, while creating a resilient, vibrant and welcoming community for all.
GM recalls close to 900 vehicles with Takata air bag inflators, blaming mfg. problems
General Motors is recalling nearly 900 vehicles in the U.S. and Canada with Takata air bag inflators that could explode and hurl shrapnel in a crash.
The recall covers certain Chevrolet Camaro, Sonic and Volt vehicles as well as the Buick Verano, all from the 2013 model year. Some 2013 Chevrolet Trax versions in Canada also are included.
The company says in documents posted on Aug. 1 by the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that the driver’s front air bag inflator can explode in a crash due to a manufacturing defect.
Xplore to offer high speed internet to rural Canadians via Jupiter 3
Rural internet provider Xplore Inc. has announced it will offer faster satellite internet to Canadians in rural locations this fall, following the successful launch of the next-generation JUPITER 3 satellite.
The satellite launched on Friday from historic Kennedy Space Center on a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket, and soon began sending and receiving its first signals.
Hughes Network Systems, a subsidiary of EchoStar, touts Jupiter 3 as the “highest capacity, highest performing satellite” it has ever launched.
‘I’m already starting to have regulars’: St. Catharines market helps new businesses gain a foothold
As the bounty of fresh fruits and veggies arrive at markets across the region, Raine Gould has been bringing a different kind of treat to the St. Catharines market.
Gould opened Black Bear Bakery earlier this year and signed on to be one of the vendors. He creates a wide range of baked goods, focusing on local ingredients and sustainability. Gould planned to start small and expand slowly, but thanks in part to the help and support of markets like the one in downtown St. Catharines, he’s already looking at opening a storefront only a few short months after starting the business.
“It’s been really good,” he said. “I’m already starting to have regulars.”

Flying too close to the sun: the overoptimism of tech companies during the pandemic
The COVID-19 pandemic tested businesses in every industry, but for the technology sector, in contrast, the period of the pandemic was one of the most expansive in recent history. Many tech firms experienced record growth, had an easier time attracting skilled workers, gaining better access to funding, and facilitating major investments, Tech firms, moreover, were generally more optimistic about their economic outlook.
Looking back with the benefit of hindsight, we saw that tech firms wielded power that other firms did not. Indeed, the pandemic made clear how much we depend on digital technology, as well as the systemic importance and enormous power of the tech giants. More important, this period also gave rise to a new market for big tech — one in which startups and smaller tech companies grew rapidly.
