With the Excellence in Trades Award, we honour an exceptional individual who has not only excelled in a traditionally male-dominated field but has also demonstrated exemplary leadership, innovation, and an unwavering commitment to making a profound impact. It is with great enthusiasm and immense pride that we announce Shelley Parker as the recipient of this award.

Shelley Parker’s inspiring career in the utility industry spans over three decades, marked by her relentless pursuit of excellence, visionary leadership, and groundbreaking achievements. Her remarkable journey is a testament to her tenacity, adaptability, and her ability to defy expectations.

Shelley embarked on her career as a Powerline Maintainer apprentice in 1990, a bold step that distinguished her as one of the few women daring to enter this male-dominated sector. Little did anyone know that this courageous move would foreshadow a career that would redefine the industry’s landscape.

Throughout her professional evolution, Shelley held a series of pivotal roles, each contributing to her reputation as a trailblazer. Her journey included positions as a Control Centre Operator, Deregulation Project Specialist, Manager of Regulatory Services, Project Lead for Smart Metering, Manager of Customer Care, Director of Customer Operations, leading to her current role as Vice President of Metering at Alectra Utilities.

One of Shelley’s defining attributes is her innate ability to lead transformative projects that have left an indelible mark on the industry. Her instrumental role in navigating the complexities of the electricity sector has reshaped the way electricity services are delivered for customers across Alectra’s territory, including the Niagara Region.

Shelley’s vision and expertise were instrumental in the successful deployment of the first-generation Smart Meters and Time-of-Use rates between 2004 and 2009. This innovation revolutionized customer engagement and promoted energy conservation, reflecting Shelley’s dedication to a sustainable energy future.

At present, Shelley is spearheading Alectra Utilities’ efforts in the development and implementation of Smart Grid 2.0. This visionary project integrates cutting-edge technology, grid optimization, and customer-centric solutions, positioning Alectra at the forefront of innovation within the utility sector.

But Shelley’s contributions extend beyond her professional accomplishments. Her commitment to community engagement is equally impressive. She champions charitable initiatives, mentors emerging professionals, and dedicates her time to address pressing social and environmental issues.

As an Executive Sponsor of the ‘Walk-a-Mile in Their Shoes’ charity walk in Hamilton, Shelley raises awareness and funds to support at-risk women and marginalized communities. Her dedication extends to volunteering with shelters, where she provides meals for those experiencing poverty and homelessness. Her contributions to healthcare are also noteworthy, as she represented Alectra Utilities by presenting donations for urgent care equipment at Niagara Health.

In her 33-year career within the male-dominated utility industry, Shelley has made substantial contributions and notable impacts, thriving in an environment where few women have ventured. Her progression from a Powerline Maintainer apprentice to Vice President of Metering highlights her unwavering commitment to excellence.

As a mentor and advocate for diversity and inclusion, Shelley’s leadership has been transformative. She chairs the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee at OACETT, demonstrating her dedication to inclusivity and equity in the industry.

In her current role as Vice President of Metering at Alectra Utilities, Shelley leads efforts in “Grid Edge” technology implementation, positioning the company at the forefront of innovation in the face of electrification, climate change, and net-zero targets.
