Niagara Casinos Donates Over $215,000 to United Way Niagara

Niagara Casinos is excited to announce that this year’s annual workplace fundraising campaign resulted in a $215,246 cheque presentation to United Way Niagara at Fallsview Casino Resort.

The announcement represents one of the largest donations in the region with $108,946 raised through event fundraisers combined with $106,300 in corporate support.

Tree Lighting Kicks Off Snowflakes & Angels Christmas Campaign

Hotel Dieu Shaver’s annual kick-off to the Snowflakes and Angels Christmas Campaign was a huge success — the Christmas tree in downtown St. Catharines was lit in spectacular fashion with help from country star and St. Catharines native, Tim Hicks.

Over 300 guests enjoyed free pizza, coffee, hot chocolate, wine and beer, a photobooth, kids’ crafts and a special visit from Sant. The event showcased the patient story of Celine Labrie and her experience at Hotel Dieu Shaver.

Rankin Cancer Run Contributes Remarkable $800,000 to Cancer Care at Niagara Health

On May 26, 2018, more than 14,000 people participated in the 13th Annual Rankin Cancer Run, raising an extraordinary $1.15 million for cancer care in Niagara. On December 11, Niagara Health Foundation was presented with a remarkable $800,000 of those funds, which will be used to support cancer care at Niagara Health.

The Rankin Run is an important fundraiser for local cancer support organizations across Niagara, including the Walker Family Cancer Centre and other services provided by Niagara Health. In its 13 years, the event has raised more than $8.7 million.

Habitat for Humanity Excited Over Plan for Niagara Falls

A townhouse complex planned for Niagara Falls could be the biggest project yet for Habitat for Humanity Niagara. The agency has acquired land east of Dorchester Road between McLeod Road and Hawkins Street, and early planning calls for it to include 12 to 18 townhouse units.

It’s still very early in the process — plans haven’t even been drawn up or submitted to city hall yet — but organizers are excited. “This is our first development (of this size) so it’s difficult for us to give timelines, because we’ve never been through this,” said chief operating officer Keith Gowans.

IceDogs, Police Deliver Bear Necessities to Hospitalized Children

On December 17, the Niagara IceDogs and members of the Niagara Regional Police delivered teddy bears to children at the St. Catharines hospital. The IceDogs hockey team recently had its teddy bear toss, when fans brought teddy bears and threw them on the ice. More than 3,500 bears were collected — about 1,000 more than last year.

The teddy bears will also be handed out by Victim Services Niagara to the children they take care of. Community organizations that help children in trauma situations will also be receiving some of the bears.

Preparation Underway for Spirit of Christmas Dinner

For the men, women, and children in crisis in our community, for students far from home, for those finding themselves on their own over the holidays, a Christmas meal can mean so much more than just a plate of food. It is a chance for connection, to be welcomed by smiling volunteers and to know that someone cares about you.

The De Divitiis family, friends, and students from Niagara College are busy preparing for the 2018 Annual Spirit of Christmas Dinner, which will once again be held at Gord’s Place in downtown St. Catharines.

Canadian Chamber Of Commerce Endorses Carbon Pricing As Most Efficient For Emissions Reduction

Canada’s largest business group has endorsed a carbon tax as the most efficient way for the country to cut greenhouse gas emissions. In a report released on December 13, the Canadian Chamber of Commerce says there is general consensus in Canada that something needs to be done about climate change, and the debate should not be about if, but how that happens.

Aaron Henry, the Chamber’s Director of Natural Resources and environmental policy, said the businesses that make up its membership agree a carbon price is the most efficient way to do it. “Our members are very much in favour of it,” he said. “They’re happy to do this. We applaud the Canadian government’s direction on this.”

Long-Term Transportation Plan Fundamental to Ontario’s Diverse Transportation Needs

On December 5, the Ontario Chamber of Commerce released Moving Forward: Towards a Strategic Approach to Ontario’s Transportation Needs (Part I), a policy report calling on the Ontario Government to develop a Long-Term Transportation Plan. To address the current and future transportation needs of the province, the report highlights three areas of opportunity that will help improve the movement of goods and mobility of Ontarians.

In a recent OCC survey, 58 percent of Ontario businesses rated existing transportation infrastructure as fair or poor. With much of the existing infrastructure in Ontario built in the 1950s and 1960s and nearing the end of its useful life, the OCC recognizes that the costs of investment are high, and Ontario is far behind when it comes to building new and maintaining old infrastructure.

Niagara Regional Council Appoints New Regional Chair

On December 6, Niagara Region announced that Jim Bradley has been appointed to the position of Regional Chair by a vote of Regional Council for the 2018–2022 term. Bradley, who is the eighth Regional Chair for the Niagara Region, began his political career as a St. Catharines City Councillor from 1970–77. He served as the Member of Provincial Parliament for St. Catharines from 1977–2018.

During his time as MPP, Bradley held roles as Provincial Minister of Environment, Transportation, Municipal Affairs and Housing, Tourism and Recreation, Community Safety and Correctional Services, and Seniors. Bradley has contributed to the Niagara community as a hockey and baseball coach, manager and referee; as member of Grantham Optimist Club, as an active supporter of the Rankin Run, Gillian’s Place, Start Me Up Niagara, Community Care, Bethlehem Place and other volunteer organizations.

Fonthill Girl is the Artist for Niagara Health’s 2018 Holiday Card

“Open Your Heart and Be Kind” is the message on the joyful holiday drawing that will be the face of Niagara Health’s 2018 Holiday Greeting Card. Alexa Kirkwood, nine-year-old daughter of Service Desk Analyst David Kirkwood at Niagara Health’s Data Centre in Thorold, is the brilliant artist behind the grand prize-winning entry of the 12th Annual Holiday Card Contest for kids.

The colourful drawing shows a nurse, an elf, along with Santa and his reindeer spreading this message of kindness. “Alexa’s drawing is meant to bring joy to sick children,” says her father David. “Her drawing is about being kind and sharing with others, especially during this holiday season.”

IceDogs Fans Make It Rain Teddy Bears To Support Victim Services Niagara

Fans launched more than 3,500 stuffed animals onto the ice at Meridian Centre during the annual Niagara IceDogs Teddy Bear Toss on Saturday, December 8. The stuffed animals were collected by Victim Services Niagara, in conjunction with Niagara Regional Police, to provide comfort to children throughout the region.

The plush rain happened eight and a half minutes into the first period, when IceDog Kirill Maksimov scored the first goal for the home team. The IceDogs were playing the North Bay Battalion. The IceDogs won the game 5-2.

Project Share Gets Big Boost from Good News Breakfast

It was another banner breakfast for Project Share on Friday, December 7, as they hosted their most successful Good News Breakfast ever. The event, hosted this year at the Greg Frewin Theatre, brought in more than $174,000 in toys, food and monetary donations.

“When we started this year, I said we wanted to get over the $160,000 marker this time, and we did it,” said Chris Russell, an organizer from Niagara Transit. By the end of the breakfast event, a city bus was stuffed to the ceiling with Christmas goodies which will be distributed around the city during the holiday season. In an average December, Project Share will distribute about 75,000 pounds of food, and provide assistance to more than 2,000 families.

Sen. Jane Cordy and Sen. Diane Bellemare: Inter-Provincial Trade Barriers Are A National Embarrassment

Canada’s framework for interprovincial trade is patchy at best. While Canada has signed on to free-trade agreements with countries around the world, there are significant barriers to the free flow of goods and services within our own borders. Studies have suggested that these interprovincial trade constraints cost the Canadian economy up to $130 billion every year — and may negatively impact international trade relations.

Removing barriers to interprovincial trade will be the focus of a first ministers meeting in December between Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and the premiers and territorial leaders. The prime minister has flagged the issue as “a massive priority.”

Canadian Chamber of Commerce Endorses Cyber Certification Program for Business

A year ago a certification program for confirming to the public that a Canadian business has at least minimal cyber security controls was announced by CyberNB, an arm of the New Brunswick government. Since then it’s been slow getting firms and government departments certified that they have passed the Cyber Essentials Canada test and can display its logo on websites and marketing material.

On December 6, the program hopes to make a major leap by announcing a partnership with the Canadian Chamber of Commerce, which will give it greater visibility to 200,000 businesses who are members of the 450 chambers and boards of trade across the country. As an incentive, those members will get a 25 per cent discount on the certification fee they have to pay to be tested.

Announcing a Drive to Cut Red Tape Wins Applause, But Doing it is a Thankless Task

In political terms, Scott Brison is often the minister of thankless tasks. The President of the Treasury Board handles internal government rules and processes, cost controls and contract negotiations with public servants. Now Mr. Brison is taking on one of those things governments have launched over and over again: a deregulation drive.

On December 5, Mr. Brison and Intergovernmental Affairs Minister Dominic Leblanc were at a union hall to call for provinces to harmonize building codes and to announce the federal government is doing things such as modernizing meat inspection rules and standardizing what can be called vodka in Canada.
