Niagara’s unemployment rate doesn’t yet represent pandemic impact

While the unemployment number in Niagara looks better than the overall national rate, the Greater Niagara Chamber of Commerce (GNCC) warns residents that the data doesn’t tell the full story.

During the month of April, the first full month that was impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, the unemployment rate in Canada was 13 per cent, up from 5.6 per cent in February. That April number marks the second-worst rate recorded since 1976, when such data was first available.
