GNCC Welcomes Investment in STEM Education, Calls for Long-Term Sustainability Measures

The Greater Niagara Chamber of Commerce (GNCC) applauds the Ontario government’s $750 million investment in expanding science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) programs at colleges and universities across the province. The GNCC views this as a meaningful and much-needed step toward addressing workforce shortages and preparing students for high-demand roles in Ontario’s future economy.

Businesses across Niagara continue to report difficulty in recruiting the skilled workers they need to grow. Strengthening STEM capacity within the postsecondary system will help close this gap, support innovation, and ensure Ontario remains competitive in a global market.

However, the GNCC also underscores the importance of sustained and stable funding for post-secondary institutions, echoing the findings of the Ontario Blue Ribbon Panel on Postsecondary Education. Without increasing tuition fees, increasing direct funding, or both, it will be increasingly difficult for Ontario’s post-secondary institutions to train the workforce that we need for our future, not to mention endangering the significant economic impact that colleges and universities have on their host communities.

“This is an important and forward-thinking investment,” said GNCC President & CEO Mishka Balsom. “But we must ensure that our colleges and universities have the resources they need not just today, but into the future, to provide the high-quality education and training that our economy depends on. We urge the government to take the next step toward long-term sustainability for our educational institutions.”
