Greater Niagara Chamber of Commerce

Spotlight: The Honourable Rob Flack Gallery

We were honoured to be joined yesterday by the Honourable Rob Flack, Ontario’s Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing, and local representative the Honourable Sam Oosterhoff, Associate Minister for Energy, for our Spotlight speaker series, in partnership with Niagara Association of REALTORS® (NAR).

We had a wide-ranging discussion about building more housing, the economy, the impact of trade and tariffs, governance, red tape, and more. A former businessman himself, Minister Flack said that a growing economy is a rising tide that lifts all boats, and that’s the foundation of a solution to any and all of Ontario’s challenges. But is there more room to standardize and simplify building codes and official plans, to cut through the red tape? Definitely – and that’s something the Ministry is looking at, along with more relief for first-time homebuyers, rebates, and other measures to help people trying to find a home in Ontario.

But ultimately, we heard, all the rebates, programs, and red tape reduction can’t help if there’s no housing available. The highest priority for Minister Flack is getting more homes built and creating the strong supply that will restore balance to the housing market, and the Province is working to clear the way for developers to do that. The housing file is a high priority for the GNCC, for the NAR, for Niagara, and for the Government of Ontario.
