Niagara’s unemployment rate has fallen from 8% in July to 7.5% in August, the latest data from Statistics Canada’s Labour Force Survey have shown. Meanwhile, the provincial unemployment rate rose from 6.8% to 7% in the same period, while Canada’s increased 0.2 percentage points to 6.5%. Niagara’s participation rate fell slightly while employment stayed the same, indicating that this drop could have been caused by people leaving the workforce.
Ontario’s Minister of Economic Development, Job Creation and Trade, the Honourable Vic Fedeli, acknowledged that employment in Ontario dipped last month, but reminded observers that the province has added more than 150,000 jobs so far this year.
Sanctioned encampments could help Niagara’s homeless crisis, advocates say
As homeless encampments creep further from downtowns into outlying areas of Niagara, an approach touted in other municipalities could help, advocates say.
In early August, Hamilton Mayor Andrea Horwath proposed so-called “sanctioned encampments” to help centralize people experiencing homelessness, allowing for timely access to services, while utilizing city-owned properties to move people out of parks.

GO Transit is alerting riders of service adjustments this weekend, impacting Lakeshore West riders headed to and from Niagara Falls.
Lakeshore West trains will be running on an hourly schedule due to construction on Saturday and Sunday.
