Strike averted: Niagara Parks and union reach tentative agreement

It looks like hundreds of Niagara Parks workers will not strike during the peak tourism season, as the provincial agency and union that represents more than 850 employees reached a tentative agreement on a new contract today.

The tentative agreement is subject to ratification by Ontario Public Service Employees’ Union (OPSEU) Local 217 and the Niagara Parks Commission.

As a result, all public-facing Niagara Parks operations will continue as normal, without interruption.

NOTL Council votes against St. Davids farm storage proposal — again

A controversial plan for a large agricultural storage and market hub on protected farmland in St. Davids is once again dead. Lord Mayor Gary Zalepa attempted to use his provincially given “strong mayor powers” to save it, but failed when council voted against the project for a second time.

The proposal would have allowed agricultural equipment storage, a farm produce storage building and an agricultural market taking up 4,000 square metres total at 263 Concession 6 Rd. in Niagara-on-the-Lake.

The unfamiliar use of strong mayor powers put the bylaw back on the council table Tuesday night. It needed four votes to pass under the strong mayor process, but failed 8-1. Zalepa was the only member of council in favour.

Canada’s Building Trades Unions launch Indigenous Reconciliation Action Plan

Canada’s Building Trades Unions (CBTU) announced the release of its Indigenous Reconciliation Action Plan (IRAP), a national structured framework designed to try and advance Indigenous participation, leadership, and economic opportunity across the unionized construction sector.

Led by CBTU’s Director of Workforce Development, Lindsay Amundsen, and in partnership with Mokwateh, an Indigenous-owned consultancy, the IRAP establishes a sector-wide approach to reconciliation, reportedly providing practical tools, clearer commitments, and measurable pathways for CBTU affiliates and provincial councils to strengthen relationships with Indigenous communities and expand access to careers in the skilled trades.

Province announces framework for the Ontario Defence Industrial Strategy

The Ontario government revealed its framework for the Ontario Defence Industrial Strategy (ODIS), a 10-year strategy trying to grow the province’s defence industry and position its companies and workers for long-term success. The framework highlights Ontario’s reported strengths and advantages in research and development, critical minerals, nuclear energy, aeronautics, manufacturing and technology, as well as the province’s workforce.

With escalating geopolitical tensions driving defence budgets higher worldwide, there is a generational economic opportunity for jurisdictions willing to act quickly to leverage industry strengths.

The world is relearning the value of reliable energy

Falic Chin, The Hub

For months, much of the public conversation around the closure of the Strait of Hormuz and the ensuing energy crisis has focused narrowly on oil prices- whether gasoline will spike, whether inflation will return, and whether markets are overreacting or underreacting.

But several geopolitical and energy observers say a much deeper transformation is underway, one capable of reshaping everything from consumer habits and industrial policy to global trade routes, infrastructure planning, and the assumptions underpinning 21st-century globalization itself.
