Carney outlines his government’s priorities in 1st post-election news conference
Prime Minister Mark Carney, speaking in his first press conference since the Liberal election win, said he is focused on building Canada’s economy and plans to meet with U.S. President Donald Trump next week, adding that King Charles will be in Canada for the upcoming speech from the throne.
The week of May 12 Carney said he will name his new cabinet, which he said hasn’t yet been finalized, and he said the Liberals will not enter into a formal pact with the NDP to maintain the minority government.
The Prime Minister also announced that he will travel to Washington, D.C. on May 5, 2025, to meet with President Trump.

GNCC Supports Ontario’s Internal Trade Legislation
The Greater Niagara Chamber of Commerce (GNCC) is pleased to see the Ontario government’s introduction of the Protect Ontario through Free Trade within Canada Act. This new legislation is a welcome move to reduce interprovincial trade barriers and make it easier for Ontario businesses to operate and grow across the country.

St. Catharines seeks feedback on voting methods for 2026 elections
As planning begins for the 2026 municipal and school board election, the City of St. Catharines is inviting residents to share how they would prefer to vote.
An online survey is now available at engagestc.ca/ElectionSurvey, where residents can learn more about the options under consideration – including in-person voting, online voting, and vote-by-mail – and weigh in on what voting methods would make participation easiest and most accessible for them.

Auto parts tariff exemption provides “relief,” according to Magna
The head of Magna International Inc. is cheering a tariff exemption for automobile parts compliant with the Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement.
The U.S. had said last month it would start charging a 25 per cent tariff on all imported auto parts by May 3, but a U.S. Customs and Border Protection guidance released on May 1 provided clarification.
“Definitely that gives a lot more certainty and relief in our planning process,” said Magna chief executive Swamy Kotagiri on an earnings call on May 2.

Following an extensive global search, Scott Johnstone has been appointed Vice-President, Administration and Services, responsible for a diverse range of critical, university-wide services. The appointment is effective May 2, 2025.

Canada Post workers could strike again soon. Here’s why
After striking workers took to picket lines and a “couple million” packages piled up just before Christmas last year, Canada Post is back at the negotiation table with the union representing its employees this week.
The Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) and the postal service are trying to reach a deal on a new collective agreement before their old one runs out on May 22.
The strike in late 2024 ended when the Canada Industrial Relations Board ordered the two sides back to work on Dec. 15. It also extended the collective agreements between the workers and their employer until May 22, which is what employees have been working under ever since.
