Non-Profits: Are You Leaving Grant Funding on the Table?

Grant research is time-consuming, the Canadian funding landscape is complex, and the application process can be a significant investment before you even know if your project is competitive. Most organizations aren’t losing to better projects — they’re losing to better preparation.

Upper Edge Consulting Canada is presenting at the GNCC’s Blueprint Learning Series on May 20th — covering how AI is changing the way organizations research grants, how to layer your funding streams to achieve consistent cash flow, and what post-award reporting actually requires.

Entrepreneurs: you’re not left out. Many of the same grant rules that apply to non-profits apply to for-profit businesses too — and we’ll show you exactly how to start looking.

This is a working session, not a sales pitch. Come ready to walk away with something you can use.

Carney, Smith reach energy agreement that could see pipeline construction start in 2027

The federal and Alberta governments have advanced a climate and energy agreement that could see construction on an oil pipeline to the West Coast start as early as September 2027.

Prime Minister Mark Carney and Alberta Premier Danielle Smith made the announcement on Friday in Calgary. The agreement includes a plan to increase Alberta’s industrial carbon price, though at a slower pace than previously projected.

Largest federal infrastructure investment in Town of Lincoln history

The Town of Lincoln will be better protected from the impacts of flooding and shoreline erosion thanks to a contribution of up to $33.7 million from the federal government through the Disaster Mitigation and Adaptation Fund (DMAF). This represents the single largest infrastructure investment made by the Government of Canada in the Town of Lincoln.

As Honda Canada suspends EV plans, partner Asahi Kasei forges ahead in Port Colborne

Honda Canada has indefinitely suspended plans for a new electric vehicle manufacturing complex in Alliston, which had the potential to create 1,000 incremental manufacturing jobs.

Tokyo-based Asahi Kasei, a partner in Honda’s proposed EV chain, said it was aware of the decision and that its $1.56-billion lithium-ion battery separator plant under construction in Port Colborne would continue even without Honda’s immediate participation.

Manufacturing sales hit highest level since January 2025

Canadian manufacturing sales rose 3.0% to $73.6 billion in March, reaching their highest level since January 2025, led by petroleum and coal products and transportation equipment. Ontario sales increased 2.2% to $31.4 billion, helped by gains in motor vehicles, motor vehicle parts, aerospace, and petroleum products. Aerospace production reached a record high, while unfilled orders also hit a new record of $121.3 billion, pointing to continued demand in parts of Canada’s industrial economy.

Wineries say scrapping provincial trade barriers would add billions to GDP

Canada’s wine sector is worth more than $10 billion a year and the industry says a few tweaks — like scrapping domestic trade barriers — could add billions of dollars to the national economy.

A new report commissioned by the Wine Growers of Canada says the sector could be worth an extra $3.7 billion if Canadians drank more homegrown wine.

Focus on Dining Trends

A decade ago, craft beer had everyone buzzing. In a segment long dominated by multinationals, craft brewers offered new flavours, creative styles and local roots, with taprooms popping up nationwide and unique brews filling retail shelves. In recent years, however, the sector has been trending downward, a slowdown that has carried into 2026.

“After a brief lift earlier in the year—largely powered by the renewed ‘buy local’ movement—craft beer performance in both off premise and on premise channels has been in line with a slightly declining beer category,” says Gabriel Moreau, VP sales at market research and consumer insights firm NIQ Canada. “This mild contraction for craft beer follows several years of softness, a sharp contrast to the explosive growth the segment enjoyed throughout the 2010s.”

Several factors are behind the softening.
