Provincial pressure sparks regional review of costly Niagara services

The chief administrative officers of Niagara’s 13 municipalities met behind closed doors in Niagara Falls Monday to kick-start a review of how local services are delivered.

“We have been pushed and rightly so,” Niagara-on-the-Lake Lord Mayor Gary Zalepa said during last Thursday’s regional council meeting. “Taxpayers deserve modern, reformed government. It’s overdue, and now is the time for real change.”

Plan aims at boosting affordable housing in West Lincoln

Late last month West Lincoln councillors approved the township’s Affordable Housing Community Improvement Plan.

Under the plan, builders can tap into some of the $95,985 council has set aside to cover all or a significant portion of planning application costs and building permit fees for affordable units.

Gerrit Boerema, director of growth and sustainability, said the funding is available whether someone is planning to build one or 100 affordable housing units.

Millennials face lower homeownership rates than earlier generations

A new Statistics Canada study finds that millennials aged 25 to 39 had a lower adjusted homeownership rate in 2021 than Gen-Xers did in 2006 or baby boomers did in 1991. More millennials are also living with parents, with the rate reaching 16.3% in 2021, nearly double the baby-boomer rate three decades earlier. The findings point to continued affordability pressures in Canada’s housing market, with implications for workforce attraction, retention, and housing supply in growing regions.

Focus on Human Resources

In the last year, Mark Carney has put together a laundry list of fast-tracked infrastructure projects he says will create a more self-sufficient Canada. And I, like many Canadians, am aligned with that philosophy. But these are no small undertakings. Take the floating natural gas facility slated for the B.C. coast, for example, or the handful of open-pit mineral mines across the country. These projects have massive potential for Canadian prosperity, but there’s a problem: we’re short on the skilled labour needed to tackle them.

Don’t take it from me—take it from Carney himself. In his spring economic update this week, he admitted the labour shortage will stall major projects if we don’t act fast. Already, almost half of small and medium businesses say they don’t have enough skilled workers, and over the next two years, 700,000 tradespeople will retire. Carney’s solution is to invest in the skilled trades, but that doesn’t address Canada’s most immediate need. The crux of the issue is the country’s low—and shrinking—population.
