GNCC recognizes two decades of business excellence at 21st Annual Niagara Business Achievement Awards
Niagara’s business community gathered on June 18th to celebrate the accomplishments and achievements of organizations and individuals across the Niagara region.
More than 350 people attended the 2025 Niagara Business Achievement Awards at the Holiday Inn & Suites Conference Centre in St. Catharines, presented by RBC.

Canada announces retaliatory tariffs on U.S. steel and aluminum
Today, the Minister of Finance and National Revenue, the Honourable François-Philippe Champagne, announced a series of measures to protect Canadian steel and aluminum producers and workers in the face of what it termed “unjust and unprovoked American tariffs.”

Niagara-on-the-Lake appoints new CAO
Niagara-on-the-Lake Town Council is pleased to announce the appointment of Nick Ruller as the Town’s new Chief Administrative Officer (CAO), effective July 7, 2025.
With over 25 years of experience in municipal government, Nick brings a wealth of expertise, strategic vision, and a collaborative approach to the role.

Bands and festival details announced for Port Colborne’s 2025 Canal Days
Members of the media, sponsors and special guests packed the Vale Health & Wellness Centre Thursday morning as the City of Port Colborne shared the musical lineup and festival details for the 2025 Canal Days Marine Heritage Festival, presented by GIO Rail.
From Friday, August 1 to Monday, August 4, the 47th annual Canal Days promises a Civic Holiday long weekend full of internationally renowned music, family-friendly fun, spectacular fireworks, delicious food, and much more.

Canada won’t put a hold on the digital services tax on big tech companies set to take effect on June 30, the finance minister said Thursday.
Pressure has mounted on Ottawa to pause the tax ahead of trade discussions with the U.S.

Farm Credit Canada commits $2 billion to agri-food innovation
Farm Credit Canada (FCC) has announced it will invest $2 billion by 2030 to advance innovation in Canadian agriculture and food technologies.
In a recent press release, FCC said it will direct more investments into innovative devices, instrumentation, research and methodologies designed to improve efficiency, productivity and sustainability.

Access to capital can power the Indigenous economy, new report says
Indigenous entrepreneurs need better access to financial capital to expand their businesses, make essential investments and support community development, according to a new report from the Ontario Chamber of Commerce (OCC) and the Canadian Council for Indigenous Business (CCIB).
The OCC and CCIB are collaborating on A Way Forward: Ontario’s Path Towards Economic Reconciliation, Equity, and Inclusive Growth, a landmark report series designed to provide Ontario businesses with practical tools to advance reconciliation. Their latest report focuses on finance and capital, critical levers for self-determination and long-term economic prosperity.
The Indigenous economy in Canada has doubled over the last decade, surging from $24 billion in 2011 to nearly $50 billion in 2020. Yet access to financial capital remains a significant barrier for Indigenous entrepreneurs, who face higher hurdles to financing, often due to the constraints of the Indian Act, unrealistic lending policies, and a lack of culturally appropriate services.
