Canada Post workers to vote on ‘final offers’ after jobs minister forces vote

More than 55,000 postal workers will have an opportunity to vote on Canada Post’s “final offers” to employees after the federal jobs minister confirmed she will order a vote by the Canadian Union of Postal Workers in an effort to end a long-standing labour dispute.

In a statement posted to social media on Thursday (June 12), federal Jobs and Families Minister Patty Hajdu confirmed she plans to use her authority under the Canada Labour Code to direct a final vote on offers presented to postal workers on May 28.

NOTL Old Town’s protected area for historical buildings may be getting larger

The Town of Niagara-on-the-Lake is studying whether or not it should expand the heritage conservation district around many buildings centred around Queen and Picton streets.

The district would be put in to preserve the historical look and feel of that part of NOTL and protect it from significant alteration.

Proposed York Road hotel and restaurants may be grounded by airport

A hotel and two restaurants may be coming to the area of 524 York Rd., Niagara-on-the-Lake council heard last Tuesday. But a bylaw, an objection from the airport and rules surrounding the two are likely to keep this project in limbo for a little while.

The new development is being proposed as an extension of the current Staybridge Suites and Holiday Inn hotels, which are owned by the same person who is proposing this project.

Government of Ontario launches province’s first integrated energy plan

Today, the Ontario government released Energy for Generations, the province’s first-ever integrated energy plan – a comprehensive roadmap to meet future energy needs, support new housing and power the most competitive economy in the G7. This plan is an important part of the government’s work to protect Ontario by bringing together electricity, natural gas, hydrogen and other energy sources under a single coordinated strategy.

Canadians’ net worth increases in Q1 2025 despite economic headwinds

Households were wealthier in the first quarter of 2025, Statistics Canada reported today, despite headwinds of economic uncertainty and volatile markets, as their net worth—the value of all assets minus all liabilities—increased $141.2 billion (+0.8%) to $17,599.8 billion. This marked a slowdown from the last quarter of 2024 when net worth expanded by 1.0%, but was also the sixth consecutive quarter of growth.

Focus on Canada-U.S. Business

American wine has nearly stopped flowing into Canada because of widespread import bans on alcoholic drinks produced in the United States, part of a showy but forceful protest of the Trump administration’s tariff policies.

In April, Canada imported just $2.9-million of American wine – a decline of 94 per cent from a monthly average of $49.2-million last year, according to recently published Statistics Canada figures.
