MPP Sam Oosterhoff announces new Rural Economic Development Strategy

Today, Sam Oosterhoff, MPP for Niagara West, announced that the Ontario government has released a new Rural Economic Development Strategy with $10 million in annual funding for the next two years, to support economic growth, workforce capacity and business development in rural communities.

City of Welland launches community survey

The City of Welland invites residents to shape the future of public engagement by completing a new survey available on the Engage Welland platform or in hard copy at the Welland Community Centre and Welland Public Library (Main branch).

The survey is open from January 23 to February 12 at 4:30 p.m. This initiative reflects the City’s dedication to meaningful public engagement, ensuring resident voices are heard and thoughtfully considered in decision-making processes.

Niagara Transit seeks public input to shape the future of transit

Niagara Transit invites residents to participate in the second phase of its Facilities, Strategic Asset and Service Network Master Plan by reviewing four proposed network options and sharing their feedback through the Exploring Possibilities Survey.

Residents can access the proposals and share their thoughts through the Exploring Possibilities Survey at NRTransit.ca before Feb. 14, 2025.

The founder of Village of Hope Niagara, Cheryl Keddy-Scott, is leaving the CEO role she has held since 2008, but will remain a Board Member with the organization.

PAC Programming Director joins Burlington Performing Arts Centre

Director of Programming and Marketing Sara Palmieri is leaving the PAC to become the new Executive Director at The Burlington Performing Arts Centre.

Number of international travellers to Canada now at 96.7% of pre-pandemic levels

The number of non-resident arrivals (US-resident and overseas-resident arrivals combined) in Canada is now at 96.7% of the number observed in November 2019, before the COVID-19 pandemic, Statistics Canada reports.

The number of trips by US residents recorded in November 2024 was even higher, at 98.6% of the level observed in November 2019.

Government of Canada releases draft legislation to extend 2024 charitable donations deadline

Today, the Department of Finance released draft legislation (and related explanatory notes) to amend the Income Tax Act to extend the deadline for making donations eligible for tax support in the 2024 tax year to February 28, 2025.

Tesla raising prices for its vehicles in Canada by up to $9,000 starting Feb. 1

Tesla Inc. is raising prices for its Canadian vehicles by thousands of dollars starting Feb.1 amid big shifts in incentives and rising trade tension.

Prices for its Model 3 vehicle are increasing by up to $9,000, while prices for its Model Y, X and S vehicles are rising by up to $4,000, the company said on its website.

Tesla did not say why it was hiking prices nor did it respond to a request for comment.
