Trump expected to announce steel and aluminum tariffs today

President Donald Trump will formally announce a 25% blanket tariff on all steel imports today, he said aboard Air Force One yesterday. He’s also expected to roll out tariffs on aluminum and reciprocal tariffs on all countries in the coming days amid concerns about a global trade war.

An industry group representing U.S. equipment manufacturers says Trump’s plan to impose 25% tariffs on steel and aluminum imports represents “a clear and present danger” to the American businesses that rely on those materials.

The Canadian Steel Producers Association has called for retaliation in the event that these tariffs are enacted.

President Trump will sign executive orders at 5:30pm ET today, at which time the tariff is expected.

Canerector Foundation makes $500,000 donation to Niagara College

A transformational $500,000 gift from The Canerector Foundation will help Niagara College address Ontario’s ongoing skills shortage through a scholarship program and mentorship for students in high-demand skilled trades areas.

Starting in September 2025, the Canerector Scholars Program will award scholarships to more than 50 students over five years, helping to bridge the gap for those entering the skilled trades field.

Niagara Health announces new Chief of Staff

Niagara Health is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Kevin Chan as Chief of Staff and Executive Vice President of Medical Affairs, who started on February 3, 2025.

Dr. Chan has worked in large, multi-site organizations with complex and academic cross-appointed teams. Most recently at London Health Sciences Centre as Vice-President of Medicine (CME), Research and Academics and six months as Acting CEO, Dr. Chan is a proven physician leader who has established himself as a partnership builder with Boards, Medical Advisory Committees, Medical Staff Associations, executive colleagues and partners.

7-storey building with commercial space can be built at South Pelham/Webber

A seven-storey mixed-use building on Welland’s Heron Street can move forward after additional commercial space was incorporated into the proposed development, says an Ontario Land Tribunal document.

Released two weeks ago, the OLT decision said the City of Welland and 1454417 Ontario Ltd., through its planning consultant Upper Canada Consultants, reached a settlement on the proposal.

St. Catharines Community Gardens Funding applications now open

The City of St. Catharines is once again supporting community groups wanting to establish new community gardens or to improve existing gardens. Applications for the annual program are now open, providing the opportunity for incorporated charities, not-for-profit groups, and unincorporated associations and neighbourhood groups, to apply to receive matching funds from the City for as much as half of eligible start-up costs, including lumber, soil, seeds, rain barrels and other materials and equipment.

Global EV market to reach 46.31M units by 2035

The report “Strategic Insights into the EV Manufacturing Ecosystem” projects the global electric vehicle market to grow from 15.7 million units in 2024 to 46.31 million units by 2035, at a CAGR of 10.3 per cent. The industry is shifting towards modular and scalable platforms to enhance production efficiency and customization. Tesla is developing the NV9X platform for its next-generation vehicle, codenamed Redwood.
