Prime Minister unveils Canada’s new automotive strategy
The Government of Canada has announced that it will support major industrial automotive-sector investment through fiscal and other policy levers, including dedicating up to $3 billion from the Strategic Response Fund (SRF) and up to $100 million from the Regional Tariff Response Initiative to support investment in automotive manufacturing, including assembly and parts production.
Other measures announced included new emissions policies, a national charging infrastructure plan, and the return of the EV rebate program.

Government of Canada introduces the Build Canada Homes Act
Today, the Government of Canada introduced the Build Canada Homes Act, legislation that will establish Build Canada Homes as a Crown corporation whose mandate will be dedicated to building affordable housing in communities across the country.
Build Canada Homes will champion the Government of Canada’s Buy Canadian Policy by prioritizing projects that use sustainable Canadian materials, strengthen Canadian supply chains, and create good jobs at every step of the homebuilding process.

New public opinion research conducted by Abacus Data for the Canadian Home Builders’ Association (CHBA) shows widespread dissatisfaction with federal efforts to improve homeownership affordability, with fewer than one in five Canadians satisfied with current federal action.
Canadians point to Ottawa as responsible for fixing the housing crisis: 65% say the federal government is most responsible for the housing affordability crisis, and 66% say it’s most responsible for solving the problem, but only 17% think they’re doing enough to address affordability for homeownership.

Bank of Canada governor Tiff Macklem says businesses ought to “lean into” the forces disrupting the economy or risk failing to adapt.
Macklem gave a speech to the Empire Club of Canada in Toronto on Feb. 5 where he told the business crowd how “structural changes” like U.S. tariffs, artificial intelligence and slowing population growth are affecting the economy.

Senate report says governments need to ditch fees and fix the housing crisis fast
The Senate Committee on Banking, Commerce and the Economy is calling on each level of government to do its part and quickly take steps to tackle the nation’s broken housing system.
In a newly released report, the committee maintains the severity and urgency of the crisis requires “swift and co-ordinated action” from all stakeholders and levels of government as many markets face significant supply shortages and home prices remain out of reach for buyers.
