Chamber of Marine Commerce welcomes Welland and St. Catharines

The Chamber of Marine Commerce (CMC) has proudly welcomed the City of Welland and the City of St. Catharines as its newest members, strengthening municipal engagement in the CMC’s efforts to advance a more sustainable, efficient, and economically competitive marine transportation system across the Great Lakes–St. Lawrence corridor.Their addition reinforces the strategic importance of the Welland Canal, one of Canada’s most vital trade routes, and the communities that support it.

Together with the City of Port Colborne, the new members are expanding the momentum behind the Welland Canal Corridor initiative, a joint effort to promote the economic value of Niagara’s marine infrastructure and its role in driving trade, investment, and industry innovation.

Hitachi makes $30M investment in Stoney Creek

On Dec. 16, Minister Stephen Lecce welcomed an investment of $30 million from Hitachi Energy as it begins upgrading and expanding its recently purchased facility in Stoney Creek.

According to the Ont. government in a press release, the facility is a site dedicated to upgrading and extending the life of medium and large transformers up to 765 kilovolts.

Government of Canada’s contribution recognized in construction of two Welland trail projects

The City of Welland and representatives from the federal government gathered on December 17 to recognize the Government of Canada’s contribution toward the construction of two new multi-use trail links in Welland. Chris Bittle, Member of Parliament for St. Catharines, joined Mayor Frank Campion to acknowledge this investment in strengthening the city’s active transportation network.

Niagara Regional Police urges public vigilance against scams and theft in holiday season

As the holiday season approaches, the Niagara Regional Police Service (NRPS) Fraud Unit would like to take the opportunity to draw the public’s attention to potential scams, frauds and thefts.  The Fraud Unit wants to remind individuals to remain vigilant as fraudsters and thieves take advantage of increased shopping, travel, and seasonal distractions.

Niagara-on-the-Lake holds public meeting for Queen-Picton Heritage Conservation District Plan

The Town of Niagara-on-the-Lake is pleased to invite residents, property owners, businesses and community members to take part in an upcoming Public Meeting focused on the Queen-Picton Heritage Conservation District Draft Plan.

The meeting will be held on Tuesday, January 13, 2026, at 6:00 p.m., with in-person attendance at Town Hall (Council Chambers, 1593 Four Mile Creek Road, Virgil) or virtual participation.

anada’s population fell by roughly 76,000 over the third quarter, the largest decline this country has seen in records dating to the 1940s, and a result of major policy changes by Ottawa to curb immigration.

Outside of a slight drop during the pandemic, this is the first time Canada’s population has declined in the country’s history, based on historical data dating back to 1946.

Focus on Health and Safety

Canadian employers can expect a tougher, more complex occupational health and safety (OHS) environment in 2026, as regulators deploy new administrative monetary penalties, police get involved in workplace fatalities, and mental health and psychological safety issues continue to drive claims and complaints.

Traditional physical hazards and catastrophic incidents remain central to OHS enforcement, but lawyers say the legal risk is broadening toward inspectors using administrative tools instead of courts, toward greater personal exposure for supervisors and other individuals, and toward a wider conception of what constitutes a health and safety issue.
