Trump threatens 50 per cent tariffs on Canadian autos, auto parts and steel
Earlier today, President Donald Trump says U.S. tariffs on Canadian cars, trucks, automotive parts and steel will rise to 50% on January 1, 2027, following the collapse of Canada-U.S. trade negotiations.
The threatened increase could have significant consequences for Canada’s automotive supply chain and manufacturing sector, with particular relevance to Niagara’s manufacturers and automotive operations.

New 50 per cent U.S. tariffs take effect as Canada prepares retaliation
A new round of U.S. tariffs covering approximately $28 billion in Canadian goods took effect Saturday after Canada-U.S. trade negotiations broke down.
Canada is preparing dollar-for-dollar retaliatory tariffs beginning September 8, adding another layer of uncertainty for Canadian companies that import, export or operate within integrated North American supply chains.

Niagara Region seeks provincial support for wastewater infrastructure and supportive housing
Niagara Region used meetings with provincial officials to seek support for two significant local priorities: wastewater infrastructure needed to accommodate future growth and additional highly supportive housing.
Both issues have implications for Niagara’s ability to accommodate new residential and commercial development while addressing housing pressures and the infrastructure requirements associated with continued population growth.

Niagara municipalities set to declare acclaimed candidates as 2026 election ballot takes shape
Niagara’s municipal election fields are becoming official following Friday’s nomination deadline, with municipal clerks certifying candidates and declaring any candidates elected by acclamation after 4 p.m. today.
Niagara voters go to the polls October 26 to elect mayors, local councillors and school board trustees, while changes to regional governance mean the 12 mayors will also sit on Niagara Regional Council.

Lincoln extends flood-related landfill relief
The Town of Lincoln is extending waived landfill tipping fees for eligible flood-related waste through August 29 as residents and businesses continue recovering from recent flooding.
The municipality is also removing limits on the number of household truck or trailer visits, providing additional time and flexibility for property owners dealing with damaged materials and cleanup.

Ontario invests $1.59 million to expand youth sport access
Ontario is providing $1.59 million to Canadian Tire Jumpstart Charities to expand access to sport and recreation programs. More than 37,000 children and youth are expected to participate through the investment, which is intended to reduce financial and accessibility barriers that can prevent young people from participating in organized recreation across the province.

Unifor reaches tentative labour deal with General Motors
Unifor and General Motors Co. reached tentative labour agreements over the weekend just as trade tensions were heating up between Canada and the United States, the union said.
The union that represents more than 4,600 GM workers on Saturday announced that the tentative deals are unanimously endorsed by its bargaining committee.
