Canada and U.S. work to finalize trade deal as provinces agree to restock U.S. liquor
Canadian officials returned to Washington as negotiations continued ahead of Saturday’s tariff deadline. Multiple sources say the prospective agreement includes reductions to sectoral tariffs such as steel and aluminum, although the size of those reductions remains unclear, while provincial premiers have agreed to return U.S. alcohol to store shelves.

Fort Erie presses province on aerospace, infrastructure and tourism priorities
Fort Erie used the AMO conference to advocate for expanded training, support for Airbus and De Havilland, growing manufacturers and infrastructure investment. The Town also raised the Fort Erie Race Track, Niagara-GTA Corridor, shoreline resiliency and changes intended to make archaeological assessments for development more efficient.

Niagara-on-the-Lake seeks provincial support for agritourism, VQA wine and Queen Street
Niagara-on-the-Lake brought several business-facing requests to the AMO conference, including support for agritourism policies, incentives for restaurants featuring VQA wines and Queen Street planning. The Town also sought greater certainty around the Niagara District Airport and stronger provincial support for temporary foreign worker housing inspections.

U.S.-resident trips to Canada rise 6.1% in June
Trips to Canada by U.S. residents reached three million in June, up 6.1% from a year earlier and marking a fifth consecutive year-over-year increase. Automobile arrivals climbed 8.1% to 1.7 million, while air arrivals declined 1.3%. Canadian return trips from the United States also rose 5.0%.

OLT approves Nelson Aggregate’s Burlington Quarry expansion
The Ontario Land Tribunal has approved Nelson Aggregate’s Burlington Quarry expansion, clearing the way for the required aggregate licence subject to conditions. The tribunal found that concerns involving water, natural heritage, dust and blasting had been addressed and cited the project’s supply of close-to-market aggregate for GTHA growth.

Industrial product prices rise 0.6% in July as petroleum prices climb
Canadian industrial product prices rose 0.6% in July after falling 1.4% in June, driven by a 6.4% increase in energy and petroleum products. Diesel prices climbed 10.4% and gasoline prices rose 4.7%, while prices excluding energy and petroleum products declined 0.2%.

Ontario and Canada launch $1-billion infrastructure stream for non-DC municipalities
Ontario and Canada will each contribute $500 million to a new infrastructure fund for municipalities that do not levy development charges. Eligible projects can include roads, bridges and water systems supporting new and existing housing. Applications for the new Non-Development Charge Municipalities Stream will open October 29.
