The City of St. Catharines and Greater Niagara Chamber of Commerce (GNCC) are teaming up to get more women on the municipal ballot, and in seats around the City Council table.
Thanks to a grant from Women and Gender Equality Canada, in partnership with the Federation of Canadian Municipalities, the City is excited to launch Seat at the Table, a new mentorship program in cooperation with the GNCC’s Women in Niagara volunteer advisory council. Applications to the program open today for women who have an interest in politics willing to undergo six months of mentorship with the City’s three female councillors; Ward 1 Coun. Lori Littleton, Ward 4 Coun. Karrie Porter, and Ward 5 Coun. Dawn Dodge.
Recipients Announced at 19th Annual Women in Business Awards
On Friday, November 8, the Women in Niagara Council and the Greater Niagara Chamber of Commerce hosted the Women in Business Awards (WIBA) at the Marriott on the Falls.
“We are delighted and honoured to gather this year in celebration of the accomplishments of and contributions by women in the business community,” said Nicole Regehr, Chair of the WIN Council. “It’s a superb reminder of how much is being done, and WIN Council is proud to support the women doing it.”
Great Wolf Lodge Earns Ontario Business Achievement Award
On November 14, the Ontario Business Achievement Awards were presented by the Ontario Chamber of Commerce. The OBAAs celebrate incredible innovations and achievements across a broad range of industry sectors and sizes throughout the province.

Niagara Health Physician Starts First-of-its-Kind National Research Network
A Niagara Health physician is leading the launch of a national network to support the growth of research in Intensive Care Units at community hospitals in Canada. The Canadian Community ICU Research Network, which held its inaugural meeting on November 11 in Toronto, is the brainchild of Dr. Jennifer Tsang, Niagara Health’s Research Lead and Intensivist, a physician who works in the ICU.
“The goal of the network, a first of its kind in Canada, is to develop strategies for building and sustaining research programs in community hospitals,” said Dr. Tsang.
Niagara College Ranks No.1 in Top 50 Research Colleges Report
Niagara College will mark its 20th year of applied research activity with the honour of earning the number one spot in all of Canada for research.
In its annual report Top 50 Research Colleges, Research Infosource Inc. has announced that Niagara College has secured the top place in the country, based on total research funding numbers for 2018. The listing also demonstrates Niagara College's steady standing as a leader in research in Canada, as this represents the fifth year in a row of being in the Top 10.

Alzheimer Society of Niagara Hosts Caregiver Wellness Workshop
On November 27, join Alzheimer Society Niagara Region for a Caregiver Wellness Workshop: Staying Curious & What It Means to Look After Your Emotional Hygiene.
The workshop is hosted by Naomi O’Brien, Respite Services Manager, Seniors Community Programs. She has an extensive 22-year career supporting seniors and caregivers both internationally and across Niagara. She will share strategies on how to practice emotional hygiene as well as build on your understanding of effective self-care and coping strategies.
Warm a Heart This Holiday Season with the Education Foundation of Niagara
This holiday season, The Education Foundation of Niagara is proud to announce the 2nd Annual Warm A Heart Holiday Campaign, taking place across the Niagara Region.
The Warm A Heart Campaign is the result of increasing requests from school personnel for assistance with students who find themselves in need. Financial provision for such items such as winter coats, boots, socks, and hot lunches or snacks are in high demand every single day. Until December 31, community members will be able to make a donation through the website at www.efnniagara.ca. All proceeds will go toward the Student Financial Need program
President of Treasury Board Says Niagara Business Poised to Prosper
The Honourable Peter Bethlenfalvy, President of the Ontario Treasury Board, said Niagara is poised to reap the benefits as the provincial government clears the way for economic development.
“I’m very excited about the opportunities in Niagara,” said Bethlenfalvy, who was in Niagara-on-the-Lake on November 1 to deliver the keynote address during the Niagara Economic Summit. He told the crowd of about 320 business representatives and community leaders that although the province "can't create jobs," it can create conditions to allow private enterprise to prosper.
